IT Director/Software Segment Manager

 

The Software Segment Manager reports to the the CIO. They are the owner of all of the software source code and systems inside their technical domain. The manager has broad responsibilities related to the management of software systems development and support. The manager is expected to work closely with Software Product Managers, customers. They are to lead development and ensure implementation within agreed upon parameters. Responsibilities may encompass both new and existing software within their domain.

The Software Segment Manager is responsible for their technical domain and leading pull request reviews is among their primary responsibilities. Leading pull requests is how the manager coaches all members of the software team working within their domain. Supporting these pull requests, are the engineering documents and JIRA cards team members work from. The manager is responsible for authoring technical documentation to support the development of systems inside of their domain. Stemming from this documentation, a manager is responsible for working with the team to ensure JIRA cards are authored and representative of the engineering documentation. Completing the software lifecycle, the manager is responsible for releasing their relevant software and ensuring the operational stack that runs their software is well maintained and stable.

 

In addition, the manager should participate in the development process when not participating in other activities. This is to ensure the organization has a senior level developer available at all times for any given technology domain, as well as giving the manager additional insight into the development process.

 

Managers have additional responsibilities that are generally sporadic in nature, but generally specifically scheduled. These include, but are not limited to, several areas. The manager must regularly perform security audits over the codebase and systems in their domain, documenting their findings and ensuring risk mitigation strategies are in place. They are also responsible for prototyping new applications and technologies, to ensure that they are always ahead of the technological curve. Other responsibilities are special projects that may be assigned by the Director of Software or Software Product Manager relevant to the technical domain.

 

Finally, Software Segment Managers are front-line thought leaders. They interact with many parts of the software team at different stages of the lifecycle. During these interactions, it is their responsibility to remain positive and encourage collaboration and curiosity within the team.
