ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR/DIRECTOR - DMPK


JOB TITLE: Associate Director/Director, DMPK (Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics)

LOCATION: San Diego, CA; On-Site; Full Time (Minimum 3 days on-site/week)

We are seeking a highly skilled Associate Director/Director, DMPK to join our client’s innovative drug discovery and development team focused on advancing cancer therapeutics. Based in San Diego, this role offers an exciting opportunity to lead key drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics (DMPK) initiatives, supporting the transition of discovery programs into early clinical development.


Reporting to the Executive Director of Preclinical R&D, the DMPK lead will work closely with interdisciplinary teams, providing scientific and technical expertise to help drive early discovery efforts. This individual should demonstrate deep expertise in DMPK assays and their application in addressing complex project needs, as well as experience mentoring and guiding junior team members.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead and oversee in vivo and in vitro ADME/PK studies to support small molecule drug discovery and early development.
  • Represent DMPK on multiple project teams, collaborating with cross-functional teams in biology and chemistry to advance drug candidates.
  • Evaluate and interpret DMPK data, collaborating with team members to design studies that address critical project challenges.
  • Collaborate with medicinal chemists to design drug candidates that minimize metabolic liabilities, focusing on optimizing ADME profiles and drug-drug interaction risks.
  • Prepare and review nonclinical sections of regulatory submissions, supporting documentation for development candidate nominations.
  • Oversee and manage contracting and supervision of CROs for nonclinical studies.
  • Lead and mentor the in-house DMPK team, promoting a collaborative and proactive work environment with effective troubleshooting skills.
  • Manage multiple ongoing DMPK studies and ensure smooth execution of DMPK functions.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Educational Background: Advanced degree (Master’s or Doctoral) in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, or a related scientific field.
  • Experience Level: 10+ years of industry experience with a Doctoral degree, or 15+ years with a Master's degree, ideally within a pharmaceutical or biotech setting, and with proven experience leading DMPK initiatives.
  • Project Management Abilities: Skilled in independently overseeing multiple DMPK studies, with strong troubleshooting skills to address technical challenges in real-time.
  • Team Development Skills: Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor team members, fostering a collaborative and results-focused environment.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Experience preparing nonclinical regulatory documentation and supporting the process of candidate nomination for development.
  • Expertise in Drug Design: Proficiency in developing drug candidates with optimized ADME profiles, balancing potency and interaction potential.
