Meet El Dorado First Baptist Church

The foundation of First Baptist Church (EDFBC), El Dorado, Kansas, dates back to April 30, 1871. The church was chartered on October 23, 1871. For over 150 years, the church has served the community. While affiliated with the American Baptist denomination for most of its past, the church body voted to leave the association in 2005. FBC is currently an unaffiliated Baptist church. Matt Schaffner joined as the Senior Pastor in December 2024, and a new vision and core values were developed in February 2025.

About the Community & Outreach Pastor

This Community & Outreach Pastor role is a newly created strategic position focusing specifically on internal growth, external engagement, and global missions. The role is responsible for leading FBC’s efforts in building a contagious biblical community (internal focus) and connecting with the local community (external focus), with the ultimate goal that the lost are found and the marginally connected become wholehearted followers of Jesus.

The Community & Outreach Pastor‘s responsibilities include:

  • The responsibilities span internal growth, external engagement, and global missions:
  • Community and Discipleship: Champion small groups and work to involve more of the congregation in these small group ministries. Develop and execute a strategic plan to help grow the church community.

Outreach and Missions

  • Develop a strategic plan for community and outreach ministry.
  • Champion and lead church teams to participate in regular mission and outreach efforts locally, domestically, and internationally.
  • Partner With Community: Develop partnerships with other churches, ministries, missions, and community organizations to meet people where they are and push forward the mission of God’s Kingdom.

Assimilation and Training

  • Champion and lead hospitality and visitor assimilation.
  • Regularly train staff, volunteers, and the church body in outreach, evangelism, and hospitality efforts.

 Leadership and Management

  • Recruit, manage, and train volunteers for discipleship, community, and outreach ministries.
  • Participate in pastoral care and general pastoral duties (including weddings, funerals, counseling, hospital visits, etc.).
  • Be available to preach and teach in worship as requested.
  • The annual budget for the department overseen is approximately $45,000.

The Community & Outreach Pastor will be instrumental in

  • Champion Culture: The pastor must passionately cast vision for life together and how FBC reaches the world for Jesus.
  • Strategic Alignment: The pastor must coach the team to work together, live and breathe the church values, and base ministry practices on those values.
  • Accountability and Measurement: The role requires identifying what success and effectiveness look like, defining the “wins,” and measuring markers of success through a “compelling scoreboard”.
  • Expand Learning: The pastor must equip the church leaders and the church body with the knowledge and skills required to grow, live, and serve like Jesus.
  • Change Agent: The ideal candidate needs a “willingness to think outside the box and challenge the status quo” when done in support of the mission.
  •  Leadership Style: They must be willing to lead as a servant, not an authority figure.

Requirements & Experience

  • Gender: This role must be filled by a male.
  • Age: The ideal candidate will be between 26 and 55 years old.
  • Experience/Education: The ideal candidate will have 4+ years of ministry experience and possess at least a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree in ministry or theology preferred or working on an advanced degree).
  • Personal Qualifications: They must be committed to discipleship and evangelism, possess excellent relational and communication skills, and have the ability to relate and work with people of different generations, ethnic backgrounds, and socio-economic levels.
  • Theology: Must support and adhere to the EDFBC Statement of Faith, vision, and core values.
  • Reporting: This position reports to the Senior Pastor, Advisory Board, and Deacons.

Personal Characteristics and Qualifications

  •  Theological Alignment: Understanding of and willingness to serve within the doctrinal commitments of the church, supporting adherence to the EDFBC Statement of Faith, By-laws, vision, and core values.
  •  Calling: exhibit a clear calling to pastoral ministry with a heart for discipleship and outreach.
  •  Skills: Excellent organizational and relational skills with the desire and ability to develop volunteer leaders and teams.
  •  Focus: Passion to connect the congregation, through community life within the church to the community of El Dorado. In addition you desire to see the community connected with Jesus, His church, and our mission.
  •  Commitment: Committed to discipleship and evangelism through the community of the local church.
  •  Servant Leader: Must be a servant leader committed to doing whatever it takes to accomplish the mission Jesus gave us.

El Dorado is the county seat of Butler County, Kansas, located 30 minutes outside of Wichita, which offers amenities of a larger city in a suburban to rural setting. The city population is 12,993.

The city is a growing community, and 33% of the populace within a 5-mile radius of the church falls into the birth to college age range. El Dorado is home to El Dorado Lake, a major year-round recreation destination for fishing, boating, and family fun, featuring 8,000 acres of water. It is also the only town in Kansas designated as a City of the Arts.

Major employers include the HF Sinclair Refinery, Susan B Allen Memorial Hospital, USD 490, and Butler Community College.
