Hardware Configuration Management Specialist

Position Summary

The Hardware Configuration Management Specialist is responsible for supporting Hardware Configuration Management (CM) activities throughout the product lifecycle, from design and development through production. This role ensures engineering documentation, technical data packages, and product configurations are accurately maintained and controlled in accordance with established Configuration Management plans, industry standards, and customer requirements.

The successful candidate will work closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, and Program Management teams to manage engineering changes, maintain configuration integrity, support audits, and ensure product documentation remains accurate throughout the development lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

Configuration Management

  • Perform Hardware Configuration Management (CM) activities for complex products throughout the product lifecycle
  • Manage engineering configuration changes using established configuration control processes
  • Maintain product configuration baselines and ensure configuration integrity
  • Apply Configuration Management processes in accordance with approved Configuration Management (CM) Plans
  • Support engineering change implementation and configuration tracking

Technical Data Package (TDP) Management

  • Develop, maintain, and manage Engineering Technical Data Packages (TDPs)
  • Ensure technical documentation is accurate, complete, and compliant with customer and regulatory requirements
  • Maintain engineering documentation throughout product development and production
  • Coordinate document revisions and release activities

Product Data Management

  • Utilize Product Data Management (PDM) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems to manage engineering data
  • Maintain product structures, documentation, and engineering records
  • Support Bill of Material (BOM) creation, maintenance, and configuration control
  • Ensure engineering databases remain accurate and current

Audits & Compliance

  • Support internal and external Configuration Management and Quality audits
  • Verify compliance with established CM processes, policies, and industry standards
  • Assist in preparing documentation for customer and regulatory audits
  • Support corrective actions resulting from audit findings

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and Program Management teams
  • Coordinate with customers and suppliers regarding configuration-related activities
  • Communicate configuration changes and documentation updates to appropriate stakeholders
  • Support multidisciplinary teams throughout product development and production

Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve Configuration Management processes
  • Assist with process standardization and documentation improvements
  • Support implementation of best practices that improve data accuracy and workflow efficiency

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Technical Associate's degree or four years of Configuration Management experience

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant Configuration Management experience
  • Experience supporting engineering documentation and product configuration control
  • Experience working with Product Data Management (PDM) or Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems

Technical Skills

  • Experience using PDM or PLM databases
  • Strong Microsoft Office proficiency
  • Experience preparing reports, metrics, and technical documentation
  • Understanding of engineering documentation and configuration control processes
  • Strong organizational and document management skills

Preferred Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM-related field or eight years of Configuration Management experience

Experience

  • Experience supporting defense or aerospace programs
  • Experience with PTC Windchill
  • Experience managing complex Bill of Material (BOM) structures
  • Experience supporting engineering change management processes

Technical Knowledge

  • Working knowledge of Configuration Management standards and engineering documentation, including:
  • MIL-HDBK-61A
  • MIL-STD-31000
  • EIA-649
  • ASME Y14.24
  • ASME Y14.100
  • Formal training in Configuration Data Management (CDM)
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including complex formulas and data analysis
  • Familiarity with Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI)
