Senior Mechanical Engineer – Production & Sustaining Engineering

Location: Alpharetta, GA

Employment Type: Contract

Work Arrangement: Fully Onsite

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to provide production and sustaining engineering support for ruggedized displays, electronic modules, and mechanical packaging assemblies used in military and aerospace applications.

This position will focus on troubleshooting mechanical issues within a manufacturing environment, resolving production nonconformances, implementing engineering changes, and driving Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) investigations to closure.

The ideal candidate will possess strong mechanical design experience, proficiency in Creo and SolidWorks, and a demonstrated ability to support production operations in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

This is a hands-on engineering position requiring daily interaction with Production, Operations, Electrical Engineering, Quality Assurance, and Program Management teams. The successful candidate must be comfortable working directly on the manufacturing floor, independently resolving technical challenges, and collaborating with both onsite and remote engineering personnel.

Key Responsibilities

Production & Sustaining Engineering

  • Provide daily mechanical engineering support for the manufacturing and assembly of ruggedized displays, electronic modules, and mechanical packaging systems.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical issues affecting production, product quality, and manufacturing efficiency.
  • Work directly with production personnel, manufacturing engineers, and quality teams to investigate technical problems and implement corrective actions.
  • Support sustaining engineering activities to maintain product performance, manufacturability, and compliance with established design requirements.
  • Assist with prototype builds, first article inspections, and production ramp-up activities.
  • Identify opportunities to improve manufacturing processes, product reliability, and assembly efficiency.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to resolve mechanical and electrical integration challenges.

Mechanical Design & Engineering Documentation

  • Develop, modify, and maintain 3D mechanical models, detailed engineering drawings, and associated technical documentation.
  • Utilize Creo and SolidWorks to implement design modifications, manufacturing improvements, and corrective actions.
  • Support engineering drawing updates and model revisions based on production feedback and identified design issues.
  • Prepare and process Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) and Engineering Change Orders (ECOs).
  • Support the development and maintenance of Bills of Material (BOMs), parts lists, and related engineering documentation.
  • Assist with the creation and review of manufacturing work instructions, process routers, and inspection documentation.
  • Ensure engineering changes are accurately documented and communicated to affected manufacturing and technical teams.

Root Cause Analysis & Quality Support

  • Lead and support Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) investigations involving mechanical failures, production defects, and nonconforming materials.
  • Perform root cause analysis to identify underlying design, manufacturing, or assembly issues.
  • Develop and implement corrective actions to prevent recurring mechanical failures and production disruptions.
  • Collaborate with Quality Assurance to evaluate discrepant materials and recommend appropriate dispositions.
  • Support failure analysis activities and document investigation findings, corrective actions, and resolution status.
  • Monitor open RCCA investigations and ensure corrective actions are implemented and documented through closure.

Cross-Functional Engineering & Program Support

  • Partner with Electrical Engineering to resolve mechanical and electrical integration issues involving displays, electronic packaging, and related assemblies.
  • Coordinate with Production, Operations, Quality Assurance, and Program Management to prioritize engineering support activities.
  • Communicate the status of production issues, corrective actions, and engineering changes to project stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with onsite mechanical engineering personnel to balance workload and address changing production priorities.
  • Provide technical updates, engineering reports, and project status information to engineering leadership.
  • Support additional mechanical engineering and manufacturing initiatives as business needs require.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant mechanical engineering experience, including mechanical design and/or production engineering support.
  • Proficiency in Creo and SolidWorks for 3D modeling, mechanical design, and detailed engineering drawing development.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting manufacturing or production operations, including troubleshooting mechanical issues and resolving production challenges.
  • Experience performing Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) investigations and applying root cause failure analysis methodologies.
  • Experience developing, modifying, and maintaining mechanical engineering drawings and technical documentation.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, manufacturing processes, and engineering problem-solving techniques.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with Production, Quality Assurance, Electrical Engineering, and Program Management teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to document technical findings and communicate corrective actions.
  • Ability to work independently while coordinating with onsite engineering personnel and remote leadership.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple technical priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to work onsite full-time in Alpharetta, GA.
  • Must be able to obtain a U.S. government security clearance. Security clearances may only be granted to U.S. citizens.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience using Autodesk Inventor for 3D mechanical modeling and engineering drawing modifications.
  • Previous experience designing or supporting ruggedized electronic systems, military-grade displays, or electronic packaging assemblies.
  • Mechanical engineering experience within the aerospace, defense, or military electronics industries.
  • Familiarity with military environmental and electromagnetic compatibility standards, including MIL-STD-810 and MIL-STD-461.
  • Experience with Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles.
  • Experience preparing, processing, and managing Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) and Engineering Change Orders (ECOs).
  • Familiarity with engineering change control, product lifecycle management, and material control systems.
  • Experience with Agile, Oracle, EPDM, or similar engineering documentation and configuration management platforms.
  • Experience supporting prototype development, first article inspections, and production transitions.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in an active manufacturing environment involving prolonged standing, walking, bending, kneeling, and other physical activities.
  • Ability to lift, move, or position objects weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity and coordination necessary to handle mechanical components, tools, and inspection equipment.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring close visual inspection, depth perception, color differentiation, and attention to detail.
  • May occasionally be required to work with small components or perform inspections using a microscope for extended periods.
  • Ability to work overtime during periods of increased production demand.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.

Security Clearance & Export Compliance

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. government security clearance. Eligibility for a security clearance is limited to U.S. citizens.

This position also involves access to information subject to U.S. export regulations. Access is limited to individuals who meet applicable export-control eligibility requirements, including U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, protected individuals as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or individuals who have obtained the necessary U.S. government authorizations.
