Hazardous Materials Coordinator

Maricopa, AZ (Fully Onsite)

$27-28/HR

Long-Term Contract with Vacation, paid holidays, full benefits package


Job Summary:

The Hazardous Material Coordinator supports the Environmental Compliance Supervisor and plays a key role in managing the ordering, storage, allocation, recycling, and disposal of chemicals, fuels, vehicles, and waste materials. This position is responsible for ensuring environmental compliance through inspections, sampling, and documentation, and acts as a backup to the Environmental Compliance Supervisor.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Hazardous Materials Management

  • Oversee ordering, storage, and disposal of chemicals and fuels
  • Manage fuel/chemical allocation across departments
  • Ensure proper storage and recycling of Li-Ion batteries
  • Monitor and coordinate collection of waste oil, fuel, and coolant
  • Maintain chemical and fuel inventory records

Logistics & Waste Coordination

  • Schedule and document vehicle crushing with external vendors
  • Arrange dumpsters and pickups for tires, trash, and scrap metal
  • Coordinate specialty fuel acquisition and setup with test groups

Environmental Compliance

  • Conduct SPCC inspections to ensure site compliance
  • Perform water sampling in compliance with ADEQ standards
  • Assist with silica sampling to ensure driver respiratory protection
  • Maintain EPA Method 9 certification and perform air quality/dust observations

Operational Support

  • Troubleshoot and arrange repairs for fuel delivery systems and software
  • Assist in towing test vehicles when required

Requirements:

Education & Experience

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, or related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license

Certifications (Required or Obtainable)

  • 24 Hr HAZWOPER (within 1 year)
  • DOT/IATA Hazmat Certification (within 1 year)
  • EPA Method 9 Certification (within 6 months)
  • Forklift Certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • 40 Hr HAZWOPER
  • Familiarity with RCRA, DOT, TSCA, EPCRA regulations
  • Experience with EH&S procedures and chemical inventory audits

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs
  • Sitting, standing, bending throughout the day
  • Outdoor work in extreme weather conditions (including Arizona summers)
  • May require working weekends, holidays, and irregular hours
  • Must pass a drug screen and physical exam

Work Schedule & Flexibility:

  • Core hours: 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM, minimum 40 hours/week
  • Occasional overtime and Saturday work required
  • Frequent operation of motor vehicles, including prototypes (training required)
