Job Title:
Embedded Software Integration and Test Engineer (NO C2C)
Type of Position:
This is a contract-to-hire opportunity, with the intent to convert to a direct hire role. The contract period is typically expected to run approximately 6 to 12 months before conversion, depending on individual performance, business needs, and internal timing. Unlike a standard contract role where conversion may only be a possibility, the plan for this position is for the selected candidate to transition into a permanent role, assuming strong performance and continued mutual fit.
Candidate Requirements:
This role supports a major defense contractor and requires candidates to be U.S. Citizens due to the nature of the work and the requirement to be eligible to obtain a U.S. Secret security clearance. An active clearance is not required to start; however, candidates must meet U.S. citizenship requirements for future clearance eligibility. Permanent Residents/Green Card holders and candidates who require or currently hold work authorization through F1-CPT, F1-OPT, H-1B, TN, or other temporary visa classifications are not eligible for this role. This role is NOT open to corp2corp (C2C) or corp2hire (C2H) - no exceptions. Due to federal contractor requirements, offers may be contingent upon successfully completing a background check and drug screening, which may include testing for cannabis. There are no exceptions to this requirement, including for medical marijuana cardholders.
Job Location:
Sterling Heights, MI (on site role).
Compensation:
$50.00/hr. Overtime paid at 1.5x over 40 hours.

- This role will have 10 days PTO (PTO accrues over time). In going direct hire, there will be significantly more PTO.
Overview:
HRU Technical Resources is partnering with a leading defense contractor to hire an Embedded Software Integration and Test Engineer. We are seeking candidates with a passion for integrating, testing, and validating real-time embedded software systems. This role is responsible for integrating hardware and software components, developing and executing software verification tests, troubleshooting complex system issues, and ensuring software meets stringent performance, quality, and customer requirements.
The ideal candidate is an analytical problem-solver who enjoys tackling complex embedded systems and thrives in a collaborative engineering environment. With experience across the software development lifecycle, you will work closely with Software, Systems, Mechanical, Electrical, and Controls Engineering teams to deliver reliable, mission-critical solutions for advanced combat vehicle platforms. You should be comfortable balancing hands-on software integration, troubleshooting, and testing while maintaining a strong focus on quality and system performance.
Key Responsibilities:
Software Integration & Testing
- Develop, execute, and debug both automated and manual requirements-based software verification tests.
- Integrate embedded software onto Linux-based operating systems and hardware platforms.
- Build, configure, and maintain software and hardware integration test environments.
- Perform software verification, validation, troubleshooting, and defect analysis.
- Support software integration activities throughout the development lifecycle.
Software Development & Quality
- Participate in all phases of the software development lifecycle.
- Support development, maintenance, upgrades, and porting of embedded software applications.
- Ensure software meets technical, functional, performance, quality, and customer requirements.
- Maintain traceability between software requirements, design, and verification artifacts.
- Utilize version control and issue tracking tools to support configuration management.
Technical Collaboration
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams including Software, Systems, Mechanical, Electrical, and Controls Engineering.
- Mentor junior software test engineers by sharing best practices for testing, troubleshooting, and problem solving.
- Apply sound engineering principles and established development processes throughout the integration and testing effort.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline.
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in software integration and testing.
- Experience developing, analyzing, or reviewing requirements for safety-critical real-time embedded software.
- Experience integrating software applications on Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
- Experience with computer networking concepts, including switches, VLANs, and network protocols.
- Experience testing and troubleshooting communication protocols such as CAN, Serial, and Ethernet.
- Strong programming skills in: C++, Python, Bash
- Experience with: Git, GitLab and/or Jira, version control and configuration management tools
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Experience with National Instruments software including TestStand, VeriStand, or LabVIEW.
- Experience using model-based engineering tools such as MagicDraw, Enterprise Architect, or similar platforms.
- Familiarity with combat vehicle systems and functionality.
- Knowledge of military and commercial software development standards.
- Experience with: DOORS, UML modeling tools, CMMI for Development, Qt Framework
- Familiarity with Ethernet-based security protocols including SSL/TLS, SSH, and SFTP.
- Experience performing cybersecurity scans using tools such as Nessus and Coverity.
- Familiarity with applying STIGs and system hardening practices.
- Experience configuring and utilizing virtual machines.
Work Environment:
- This is a 1st (day) shift role. This role follows a 9/80 schedule, with 9-hour days Monday through Thursday, an 8-hour workday every other Friday, and the alternate Friday off.
- There may be occasional overtime in this role. Any OT will be paid at 1.5x.
- This will be an on-site role (no remote work).
- Offer may be contingent on a background check and a drug screening, which would include testing for cannabis. There would be no exceptions to the drug screening (eg: for individuals with a medical marijuana card).
