Sr. Controls Engineer

Contract to Direct

$60-80/hr plus OT

Lake Orion, MI and 30-50% travel

Position Summary

We're seeking a Senior Controls Engineer to lead the design, programming, commissioning, and optimization of advanced automation systems. In this role, you'll provide technical leadership throughout the project lifecycle, from concept through customer acceptance, while mentoring engineers and supporting multiple automation projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, program, and commission PLCs, HMIs, robotics, motion control, vision, and SCADA systems.
  • Develop and validate machine safety systems to meet customer and industry standards.
  • Configure industrial networks, drives, distributed I/O, and safety devices.
  • Lead equipment startup, debugging, troubleshooting, and on-site commissioning.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, robotics, manufacturing, and project management teams.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and meet customer expectations.
  • Identify opportunities to improve system performance, processes, and engineering standards.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership.
  • Support project estimating, budgeting, and scope development.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Engineering, or a related field (Associate degree with equivalent experience considered).
  • 7+ years of controls engineering experience in industrial automation or automotive manufacturing.
  • Strong experience with Rockwell Automation platforms, including ControlLogix, CompactLogix, GuardLogix, Studio 5000, and FactoryTalk View.
  • Experience programming and commissioning Safety PLCs and machine safety systems.
  • Proven experience commissioning and troubleshooting automated manufacturing equipment.
  • Leadership experience managing technical projects and mentoring engineering teams.
  • Automotive manufacturing experience preferred.
  • Experience with Siemens PLCs (TIA Portal, STEP 7, WinCC) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with GM GCCS and Ford GVOSS is a plus.

  • Risk assessments, safety validation, emergency stops, light curtains, safety scanners, and interlocks

Travel

  • Ability to travel 35–50% throughout North America for customer support, commissioning, and project implementation.
