Technical Writer I (Automotive Service Information)

Location: Warren, MI (Hybrid)

Schedule: Monday–Friday | 6:00 AM – 3:00 PM (Flexible Start Time)

Work Arrangement: Hybrid after training (Onsite Tuesday–Thursday, Remote Monday & Friday)

Position Overview

We are seeking an Automotive Technical Writer to support the development and validation of published mechanical service procedures. In this role, you will collaborate closely with Mechanical Service Information Development teams, Labor Time Technicians, and Shop Foremen to create accurate labor time studies and ensure service procedures are properly documented, validated, and optimized.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced automotive technician who enjoys technical documentation, process improvement, and working with engineering and service teams to produce high-quality service information.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Documentation

  • Create labor time studies for published mechanical service procedures.
  • Develop and maintain accurate technical documentation using multiple automotive information sources.
  • Translate technician markups and validation feedback into clear, complete service documentation.
  • Ensure published service procedures are accurate, optimized, and properly time studied.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with the Mechanical Service Information Development team.
  • Partner with Validation and Labor Time Technicians to validate service procedures.
  • Collaborate with Shop Foremen and technical teams responsible for assigned vehicle platforms.
  • Participate in meetings and communicate project status to leadership.

Project Support

  • Support Labor Time Guide initiatives and special projects.
  • Maintain data integrity while adhering to company security policies.
  • Respond professionally to requests for information.
  • Track and report project progress accurately.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Automotive Technology or equivalent technical experience.
  • Hands-on automotive repair experience with strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Experience working on complete vehicle systems, including:
  • Engine repair
  • Transmission systems
  • Mechanical vehicle diagnostics
  • General automotive repair
  • Ability to interpret technical information and communicate it clearly in written documentation.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office and standard computer applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3–5 years of automotive technician experience.
  • Heavy mechanical repair experience is strongly preferred.
  • Previous experience creating service information or technical documentation.
  • Experience supporting labor time studies or automotive service publications.
  • Familiarity with OEM service procedures and repair documentation.

What We're Looking For

The ideal candidate is an experienced automotive technician with deep mechanical knowledge who is looking to transition into a technical writing environment.

Candidates should have experience working across a wide variety of vehicle systems—not just routine maintenance. Those with extensive engine, transmission, and drivetrain experience will be especially successful in this role.

Candidates without meaningful hands-on automotive repair experience are unlikely to be a fit for this position.

Work Environment

  • Hybrid schedule after training.
  • Onsite Tuesday through Thursday.
  • Remote Monday and Friday.
  • Standard schedule is Monday through Friday from 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM, with some flexibility in start time.
  • Initial assignment is expected to last approximately 52 weeks with the potential for extension.

Why Join Us?

This position offers the opportunity to combine your automotive expertise with technical documentation, helping improve the quality and accuracy of service information used by technicians across the organization. You'll work alongside experienced engineering, validation, and service professionals while contributing to projects that directly impact vehicle serviceability and repair efficiency.
