This role provides hands-on leadership across skilled trades, ensures rapid response to equipment downtime, and drives continuous improvement aligned with GM’s Global Manufacturing System (GMS) and SPQRC (Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost) objectives.

The successful candidate will be a hands-on, technically strong leader with deep machining exposure, capable of leading large multi-trade teams, working cross-functionally with Production and Engineering, and navigating both legacy systems and modern manufacturing challenges.

Key Responsibilities

Maintenance & Operations Leadership

  • Lead day-to-day maintenance activities across machining and assembly areas, with primary focus on minimizing downtime and restoring equipment to production.
  • Diagnose equipment failures, determine root causes, and drive both immediate corrective actions and long-term reliability improvements.
  • Supervise and coordinate skilled trades personnel to ensure proper coverage, task prioritization, and execution.
  • Utilize CMMS systems (including Maximo) to monitor down equipment, track work orders, and support preventative maintenance activities.
  • Support machining-focused operations including gears, valve bodies, cases, and assembly sub-lines.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Directly supervise 20–25 skilled trades employees, including electricians, millwrights, machine repair, pipefitters, and toolmakers.
  • Lead by example with a collaborative, “one-team” leadership approach.
  • Train, coach, and develop team members while maintaining accountability to safety, quality, and performance standards.
  • Manage attendance, daily assignments, and shift handoffs to ensure continuity of operations.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Production, Engineering, and other functional teams through daily cross-functional meetings and continuous improvement sessions.
  • Partner with production counterparts to coordinate maintenance PMs and prioritize work impacting throughput and quality.
  • Escalate and coordinate with internal and external teams as needed to resolve complex technical issues.

Safety, Quality & Continuous Improvement

  • Enforce all corporate and plant safety policies, including housekeeping and Fit-for-Work requirements.
  • Support SPQRC initiatives and drive adherence to GM Global Manufacturing System (GMS) standards.
  • Ensure work is completed within schedule, manpower, and operational constraints.
  • Identify process gaps, aging-equipment challenges, and parts constraints, thinking creatively to solve problems.

Equipment & Technical Environment

  • Machining-focused equipment including:
  • Broach machines
  • Gear machines
  • Grinders
  • Valve body NTC equipment
  • Case machining equipment
  • Assembly-line supplier equipment

  • UAW environment experience is a plus, not required

Technical Skills

  • Strong understanding of mechanical and electrical systems, particularly CNC and machining equipment
  • Ability to interpret blueprints, schematics, and engineering drawings
  • Solid grasp of manufacturing processes and how upstream/downstream impacts affect production
