Senior Firewall Engineer
Location: Fully Remote (supporting Eastern Standard Time Zone)
Contract: 6 Months (Temp-to-Direct Hire)
Schedule: 9/80 schedule | Minimal travel required
Compensation: $73.96/hour + optional benefits
Position Overview
Our Defense client is seeking a Senior Firewall Engineer to join its Cybersecurity Engineering Team. This role is responsible for designing, implementing, and managing advanced network security solutions across a complex global enterprise environment.
You will collaborate with cross-functional teams, support enterprise security operations, and play a key role in strengthening and continuously improving the organization’s cybersecurity posture.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, manage, and maintain enterprise network security systems, including firewalls and web proxy platforms
- Develop and maintain technical documentation (installation guides, configuration guides, network diagrams, user documentation)
- Research, prototype, evaluate, and deploy emerging security technologies
- Provide backup support for additional enterprise security tools and platforms
- Partner with the 24/7 Global Security Operations Center (GSOC) to support operational needs
- Respond to user requests and security incidents via phone, email, or incident management systems
- Analyze network traffic patterns and security requirements for risk assessments and capacity planning
- Develop technical recommendations to address evolving threats and future scalability
Required Skills & Qualifications
Networking & Security Expertise
- Strong understanding of DNS, TCP/IP, and common transport protocols
- Solid foundation in network architecture and core security principles
- Proven experience developing, implementing, and managing firewall policies
Firewall & Network Technologies
Hands-on experience with enterprise firewall platforms, including:
- Palo Alto Networks
- Cisco ASA
- Check Point
- Juniper SRX
Configuration & Deployment
Experience configuring and deploying firewalls, including:
- Network configuration (VLANs, subnets)
- Routing configuration (static routing, OSPF)
- Security rules and access control policies
Preferred Qualifications
Industry-recognized certifications such as:
- CompTIA Security+
- CompTIA Network+
- Palo Alto Networks certifications
- Cisco security certifications
Experience Requirements
- High School Diploma: 14+ years of relevant experience
- Associate Degree: 10+ years of relevant experience
- Bachelor’s Degree: 8+ years of relevant experience
- Master’s Degree: 6+ years of relevant experience
Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
