Controls Engineer (50% Travel)


Type of Position:

This position will begin as a 12-month contract, with strong potential for long-term employment. While the contract is initially set for 12 months, there is no fixed end date, and extensions beyond the initial term are possible. Conversion to a direct hire role may occur as early as 4 months, depending on individual performance and business needs. Although direct hire is not guaranteed, it is a common outcome for high-performing team members, and most contractors in this role do transition to permanent positions over time.


Job Location:

Warren, MI (on site role). 50% travel (mostly to Ohio).


Compensation:

$46.00/hr to $52.00/hr (depending on experience) to start. Overtime is paid at 1.5x over 40 hours. There will be a $0.50/hr off-shift premium if working off-shift.

  • Available (medical, dental, 401k, vision, etc) – benefit eligibility begins 1st of the month after 30 days of employment.
  • You will have 7 paid holidays and 10 days PTO per year (PTO accrues over time). There will be significantly more PTO in converting to direct hire.


Job Description:

HRU Technical Resources has partnered with a major automotive manufacturer to hire a Controls Engineer. We are seeking an experienced Controls Engineer to support the design, installation, validation, and launch of advanced manufacturing automation systems. This role is responsible for developing control system designs, programming PLC and HMI applications, supporting equipment commissioning, troubleshooting complex technical issues, and ensuring the successful installation and startup of automated manufacturing equipment.


The ideal candidate is a hands-on automation professional with strong CNC controls experience, excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively across cross-functional teams. This individual should be comfortable working independently, managing multiple priorities, and traveling to supplier and manufacturing locations as project needs require. A strong passion for automation technology, continuous learning, and supporting equipment launches across multiple manufacturing locations is essential.


Key Responsibilities:

Controls System Design

  • Design pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical control systems for manufacturing equipment.
  • Develop electrical wiring diagrams and piping schematics.
  • Design electrical control panels.
  • Develop and modify PLC and Human Machine Interface (HMI) software.
  • Ensure control system designs meet applicable electrical and safety standards.

Equipment Installation & Launch Support

  • Support installation, commissioning, and startup of automated manufacturing equipment.
  • Perform system debugging, troubleshooting, and validation during equipment launches.
  • Verify equipment functionality, wiring integrity, and system performance at supplier and manufacturing locations.
  • Oversee equipment installation activities while ensuring safe work practices are followed.
  • Provide technical support throughout equipment implementation and launch activities.

Technical Support

  • Assist with troubleshooting complex controls issues during production and launch.
  • Support plant personnel through technical guidance and training.
  • Participate in design reviews, control meetings, and project discussions.
  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, and project teams to resolve technical challenges.

Project Support

  • Divide time between manufacturing facilities and supplier locations supporting launch activities.
  • Validate new equipment before installation into production.
  • Support future automation technologies and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Travel as needed to support project execution and equipment validation.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or another related technical discipline is preferred. Minimum of 5 years of directly related controls engineering experience in lieu of a degree.
  • 5 to 7 years of controls engineering experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of programmable machine controls hardware and software.
  • Experience designing PLC and HMI applications.
  • Experience designing electrical control panels.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD.
  • Working knowledge of electrical and industrial safety standards.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership and oversee equipment installation activities.

Work Environment / Other Info:

  • This is a 1st (day) shift role. Standard hours are 7:00am to 3:30pm. This role typically works Monday to Friday (weekend work may occur on occasion).
  • There will be significant travel in this role (approximately 50%, much of the travel to Brookville, OH).
  • This role may have occasional overtime, but it won’t be extensive. Overtime is paid at 1.5x for all hours worked over 40 hours per week.
