Safety Consultant – Construction
Location: Chicago, IL
PR: $56.22 - 61.33/hr
Contract- 9 months (possible for extension)
Position Summary
The Safety Consultant supports construction safety initiatives by partnering with business unit leaders and contractors to ensure compliance with company standards, OSHA, and applicable workplace safety regulations. This role focuses on developing safety programs, delivering training, and driving continuous improvement across large-scale construction projects.
Key Responsibilities
Safety Program Development & Compliance
- Interpret and apply safety regulations to ensure compliance across construction operations
- Develop and implement safety programs, policies, and procedures
- Support corporate safety strategies and collaborate with internal safety teams
- Review contractor safety programs and ensure adherence to company and regulatory standards
Contractor Oversight & Risk Management
- Analyze contractor safety performance data to identify trends and improvement opportunities
- Conduct audits, observations, and field assessments to ensure compliance
- Review accident investigations and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence
- Provide consultation on safety equipment, standards, and best practices
Training & Communication
- Develop and deliver safety training programs (fundamental, technical, and customized)
- Support and participate in safety committees, task forces, and meetings
- Communicate safety expectations and updates to all organizational levels
Reporting & Metrics
- Track and report safety performance metrics, including:
- Lagging indicators (injuries, illnesses, vehicle incidents)
- Leading indicators (preventative and proactive measures)
Stakeholder Engagement
- Build strong working relationships with:
- Business unit leaders and employees
- Contractors and project teams
- Union representatives and safety personnel
- Collaborate with vendors, consultants, and regulatory agencies as needed
Additional Responsibilities
- Promote a culture of safety, inclusion, and accountability
- Serve as a subject matter expert on construction safety practices
- Support project coordination and planning efforts related to safety initiatives
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Associate degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related field preferred
- Equivalent combination of education, certifications, and experience considered
- 3–5+ years of construction safety experience (large-scale projects required)
- Utility industry experience preferred
Technical & Functional Skills
- Knowledge of safety regulations, compliance, and contractor oversight
- Experience with incident investigation and case management
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- Strong understanding of safety metrics and performance tracking
