Position Overview

The Material Handler is responsible for loading, unloading, and moving materials within the plant, yard, or work site. This role supports shipping, receiving, inventory control, and safe material handling operations while ensuring compliance with company and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Load, unload, and transport materials within or near the plant, yard, or work site
  • Support shipping and receiving activities under general supervision
  • Open containers using hand tools and verify contents
  • Count, weigh, and sample materials as required
  • Track, log, and verify material data using computer systems
  • Load and unload materials onto pallets, trays, racks, and trucks (manually or using equipment)
  • Move materials using equipment such as hand trucks, forklifts, electric dollies, and similar devices
  • Stack, store, and organize materials appropriately
  • Build and prepare crates for shipping, ensuring proper packaging and protection
  • Read and interpret drawings and schematics to ensure accurate handling and storage
  • Handle hazardous material shipments in compliance with 49 CFR and IATA regulations, including:
  • Proper labeling and packaging
  • Completion of shipping documentation and certificates of analysis
  • Adherence to transportation and storage requirements
  • Maintain and update Excel spreadsheets related to production, materials, and shipping
  • Prepare and update shipping documentation (e.g., DD Form 1149 or equivalent)
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

Required Skills

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy

  • Effective communication and teamwork skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and basic computer systems
  • Familiarity with material handling and warehouse equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents (e.g., MSDS, shipping labels)

Preferred Skills

  • Experience working in a defense or regulated environment
  • Familiarity with hazardous materials handling and shipping compliance

Required Experience

  • 2–3 years of experience in material handling, logistics, or warehouse operations
  • Experience with inventory management and shipping/receiving processes
  • Experience operating material handling equipment (e.g., forklifts, pallet jacks)
  • Experience with warehouse management or inventory tracking systems

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift, push, and pull materials and equipment
  • Ability to work in a warehouse or industrial environment
