Job Summary:
The Defense Functional Safety Senior Engineer will collaborate with the software development team to ensure the platform operates in a safe condition reducing or mitigating the software and mechatronics driven risk. The role will be responsible for assessing safety throughout the systems engineering development timeline. The Defense Functional Safety Senior Engineer will assess controls and software and provide various monitors and barriers that ensure functionally safe operation of the platform.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Collaborate in a multi-functional environment to define system-level Technical Safety Requirements.
• Execute risk management efforts by defining tests utilizing a Software-in-the-Loop (SIL), and/or Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) testing environment.
• Lead the development and execution of system tests to complete Safety Verification and Validation.
• Coordinate System Safety Engineering support across safety engineering team.
• Evaluate customer requirements for System Safety and determine platform compliance.
• Conduct, as required, System Safety analyses and reports to support recommendations for design changes.
• Support System Engineering Department in development of the System Specification Document - Safety requirement management – definition, connectivity, traceability, validation.
• Perform Hazard Tracking and Preliminary and Functional Hazard Analysis (PHA & FHA) - as required, to determine compliance to contract and/or System Specification Document.
• Work with the hardware and software engineers identifying safety hazards and mitigation strategy.
• Provide mentorship to junior functional safety engineers.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience (required):
• U.S. Citizen.
• B.S. degree in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related Degree and 4 years of related experience.
Education and Experience (preferred):
• M.S. degree in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical
engineering, related degree.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities (required):
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret DOD security clearance.
• Ability to work within a team environment.
• Ability to work with the hardware and software engineers identifying safety hazards and mitigation strategy.
• Working knowledge of System Safety and/or Human Factors/Ergonomics in product development preferred.
• Working knowledge of MIL-STD-882 – System Safety or ISO 26262 – Functional Safety.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities (preferred):
• Ability to establish the safety case for selected feature sets and support building an overall vehicle level safety case.
• Ability to coordinate and review the technical guidance of the platform team in accordance to the ISO 26262.
• Ability to provide guidance and expertise in functional safety to project teams.
• Ability to tailor and develop functional safety best practices and process guidelines to support the NGDV program needs.
• Ability to support integration of functional safety into the systems engineering tools and infrastructure.
• Knowledge of project design reviews, providing risks and mitigations for the project safety related issues.
