Designer – SolidWorks / Mechanical Design

Location: Fredericksburg, VA

Pay Range: $75,000 – $85,000 annually

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Designer to support the development and modification of SolidWorks CAD models, assemblies, and engineering drawings for both new and existing products. This role will work closely with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to support product development, drawing revisions, prototype builds, and continuous improvement initiatives.

The ideal candidate will bring strong SolidWorks expertise, advanced GD&T knowledge, and hands-on experience supporting manufacturing environments involving machining, welding, and fabrication processes.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Engineering Support

  • Create and modify detailed parts, assemblies, and engineering drawings using SolidWorks CAD software
  • Support engineering and manufacturing teams with design execution, technical documentation, and product updates
  • Revise and maintain engineering drawings for existing products and ongoing projects
  • Assist with concept development and component selection for new product designs
  • Develop and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) for prototype and production assemblies
  • Support prototype assembly, fitment verification, and functional evaluations
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure manufacturability and product quality

Drawing Standards & Technical Leadership

  • Lead the application of engineering drawing best practices and GD&T standards
  • Provide technical guidance and support to team members related to drafting standards and documentation processes
  • Ensure engineering documentation complies with internal procedures and quality requirements
  • Support quality and manufacturing teams with inspection criteria and custom part documentation

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

  • Work closely with engineers, manufacturing personnel, and quality teams on product development activities
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and process enhancement projects
  • Provide technical support across multiple departments and product lines
  • Support company quality, safety, and operational objectives
  • Assist with additional engineering and design projects as needed

Required Qualifications

  • Associate degree in Design, Mechanical Design, Engineering Technology, or related field; equivalent experience may be considered
  • Minimum 5–7 years of mechanical design experience
  • Expert-level proficiency with SolidWorks CAD software
  • Strong expertise in engineering drawing creation and GD&T standards
  • Experience supporting manufacturing processes including:
  • Milling
  • Turning
  • Welding
  • Sheet metal fabrication
  • Surface finishing and coatings
  • Knowledge of materials commonly used in manufacturing and product development
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to work independently while supporting cross-functional teams
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality

Preferred Experience

  • Experience supporting prototype development and product validation
  • Familiarity with manufacturing documentation and inspection processes
  • Background working in industrial, manufacturing, or custom product environments

Work Environment

  • Primarily office-based with regular interaction within manufacturing environments
  • Occasional exposure to noise, dust, fumes, oils, and temperature fluctuations in production areas

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds
  • Must follow all company safety and housekeeping procedures

Training

  • Completion of company safety orientation and onboarding programs
  • Training on internal tools, systems, and engineering procedures as required
