Senior IBM Power / IBM i Systems Engineer
Location: Huntersville, NC
Work Model: Hybrid (3 days in office / 2 days remote)
Compensation: $120,000 – $125,000 base salary
Position Summary
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior IBM Power / IBM i Systems Engineer to provide advanced technical leadership across IBM Power servers, IBM i OS partitions, HMC, VIOS, and IBM DS storage platforms. This role is critical to maintaining the stability, performance, and security of mission-critical ERP environments while advancing modernization efforts through observability, automation, and resilience initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the escalation point for complex operational support, troubleshooting, performance tuning, and security enforcement across IBM Power and IBM i OS environments.
- Provide end-to-end administration and lifecycle management of IBM Power infrastructure, including hardware, virtualization, and operating systems.
- Administer IBM Virtual I/O Server (VIOS), including configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Lead the adoption of observability and AIOps practices to improve monitoring, reduce mean time to resolution (MTTR), and proactively identify system issues.
- Design and implement automation using Infrastructure-as-Code tools (e.g., Ansible, CL scripting) to streamline patching, compliance, and routine operational tasks.
- Support the design, testing, deployment, and ongoing support of High Availability and Disaster Recovery (HA/DR) solutions (such as MIMIX) to ensure ERP system availability and business continuity.
- Provide technical mentorship and clear communication to both technical teams and business stakeholders, ensuring alignment with modernization and platform improvement initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications
- 5+ years of relevant experience supporting IBM Power and IBM i OS environments.
- Hands-on expertise with HMC, VIOS, MIMIX HA/DR, and IBM DS storage platforms.
- Strong understanding of ITIL processes, incident management, and stakeholder engagement.
- Demonstrated troubleshooting skills, CL scripting experience, and infrastructure design capabilities.
- Ability to work standard business hours with availability for after-hours or weekend support during patching, OS upgrades, and on-call rotations.
- Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology or a related field.
- 10+ years of experience managing IBM i OS and IBM Power hardware environments.
- Experience implementing observability, monitoring, or AIOps initiatives.
- Familiarity with Fortra solutions such as Alert, Console, Compliance Monitor, and Exit Point Manager, or similar tools.
- Background in driving platform security initiatives and automating compliance processes.
