Contract Medical Science Liaison (Part-Time) – Gastroenterology/Immunology
Location: Remote – United States
Travel: Approximately 25-50%
Commitment: Part-Time Consultant (approximately 15–25 hours per week)
Duration: Initial 6-month engagement with potential extension
Position Summary
Our client, an emerging clinical-stage biotechnology company, is seeking an experienced Medical Science Liaison (MSL) consultant to provide scientific and operational support for an ongoing multicenter clinical study evaluating a novel biologic therapy for patients with Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
The study is being conducted at approximately 28 sites across the United States, with a significant concentration of sites located in Texas, Florida, Kentucky, North Carolina, Arizona, and New York.
This individual will serve as a key scientific resource to principal investigators, sub-investigators, and site personnel, helping ensure successful study conduct, protocol understanding, and effective communication between study sites and the sponsor team.
The ideal candidate will possess strong clinical research experience, established relationships within the gastroenterology community, and prior experience supporting biologic therapies in UC, IBD, and immunology indications.
Key Responsibilities:
Investigator and Site Support
- Establish and maintain strong scientific relationships with principal investigators, study coordinators, and site personnel.
- Serve as the primary field-based scientific resource for participating study sites.
- Provide timely responses to protocol-related and scientific questions from investigators and research staff.
- Facilitate communication between sites and internal cross-functional teams, including Clinical Operations, Medical Monitoring, and Clinical Development.
Scientific Engagement
- Conduct scientific discussions regarding study rationale, mechanism of action, emerging clinical data, and protocol requirements.
- Present clinical and scientific information related to biologic therapies and immune-mediated diseases in a compliant and balanced manner.
- Support investigator meetings, site initiation activities, and other study-related meetings as needed.
- Gather scientific insights from investigators and communicate findings to internal stakeholders.
Clinical Trial Support
- Assist sites in understanding protocol requirements, eligibility criteria, safety reporting processes, and study procedures.
- Support enrollment efforts and identify barriers to recruitment and retention.
- Participate in discussions regarding protocol deviations, operational challenges, and best practices.
- Collaborate with Clinical Operations to promote successful study execution.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner closely with Clinical Operations and Clinical Development teams.
- Document site interactions and maintain accurate records of scientific engagements.
- Participate in periodic internal meetings and provide field insights to support study strategy and execution.
Qualifications
- Advanced scientific or clinical degree preferred (MD, PharmD, PhD, NP, PA, or equivalent).
- Minimum of 3–5 years of experience as an MSL or comparable field medical role.
- Prior experience supporting clinical trials and investigative sites.
- Direct experience supporting biologic therapies is required.
- Experience within Ulcerative Colitis (UC), Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Gastroenterology, or Immunology is strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of ICH-GCP guidelines and clinical research processes.
- Experience interacting with principal investigators, key opinion leaders, and academic medical centers.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and relationship management skills.
- Ability to travel domestically as needed to support investigator meetings and site visits.
Preferred Attributes
- Experience supporting multicenter Phase 1, Phase 2, or Phase 3 studies.
- Existing relationships with gastroenterologists and IBD investigators are highly desirable.
- Experience working within a small or emerging biotechnology company environment.
- Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating with cross-functional teams.
- Demonstrated ability to build trust and maintain productive scientific relationships with investigators and research sites.
