About the Organization:

The organization exists to provide meals, supportive services, and housing assistance to Detroit community members in need, especially those experiencing homelessness. On an average day, the organization welcomes over 200 guests and provides them with nutritious meals, showers, laundry, and access to doctors, dentists, lawyers, and housing providers through their free clinics. The organization has been serving Detroit’s most vulnerable citizens for over 30 years, and envisions a Detroit without homelessness, where every person has the resources for sustained stability.


About the Role:

The Director of Philanthropy reports to the President & CEO and acts as a key leader for the organization, both internally and externally. The Director is responsible for all aspects of fundraising including major gifts, annual gifts, special events, grants, appeals and stewardship. This job is accomplished through the individual’s own direct effort as well as managing others and effectively leveraging the skills of staff and volunteers.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan and meet $7+ million budget for the organization that aligns with our strategic goals and objectives and ensures long term support of our operational and programmatic needs.
  • Set annual fundraising budget based on data analysis and thoughtful planning, report on revenue progress regularly to President & CEO and Board of Directors.
  • Manage a portfolio of existing top individual and corporate donors; identify, research, and cultivate top donor prospects including individuals, corporations, and foundations; develop annual engagement plans for each donor; solicit and secure major gifts and grants.
  • Support President & CEO and Board of Directors in fundraising initiatives.
  • Oversee all aspects of special events, including annual Gala, that generate revenue and awareness for our organization and our cause.
  • Manage and grow legacy giving and endowment programs, ensure the proper administration and stewardship of these funds.
  • Work in collaboration with the Communications Team on donor collateral and communications pieces, including digital and direct mail appeal letters, newsletters, brochures, annual reports, and other materials that showcase our impact and achievements, and inspire our donors and supporters.
  • Manage and lead a team of three development professionals, provide them with guidance, training, and support.
  • Collaborate with the President & CEO, Board of Directors, and other senior leadership team members to develop and implement strategic plan for organization.
  • Collaborate with program staff, volunteers, and vendors to ensure the coordination and integration of our fundraising and communications efforts.
  • Monitor and evaluate fundraising activities, use data and metrics to report on progress and outcomes, identify areas for improvement and innovation.
  • Stay abreast of the best practices and trends in nonprofit fundraising and communications, and attend relevant trainings, workshops, and conferences.
  • Ensure compliance with the legal and ethical standards and regulations for nonprofit fundraising, maintain the confidentiality and integrity of our donor and supporter information.
  • Represent the organization externally at community events, networking events, and other opportunities to spread awareness and partnership of the mission.
  • Collaborate with finance team and database contractor to ensure timely and accurate gift entry and acknowledgement, and budget reconciliation. 


Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, such as business, marketing, or communications. A master’s degree or a CFRE certification is preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, with a proven track record of securing six-figure gifts and grants, experience with legacy giving and endowment building a plus.
  • Experience leading and managing a team of fundraising professionals, and providing coaching, mentoring, and feedback.
  • Success developing and executing effective donor communications and marketing materials, using various channels and platforms, such as websites, social media, email, and print.
  • Worked with fundraising software and databases, such as Raiser’s Edge, DonorPerfect, or Salesforce.
  • Leadership and supervisory experience building and aligning teams around a shared vision and mission.
  • Have an entrepreneurial mindset, with the ability to overcome obstacles and enter new territory with creative solutions and meet challenges with creativity.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling messages and stories that resonate with diverse audiences.
  • Knowledge of the best practices and trends in nonprofit fundraising and communications, as well as the legal and ethical standards and regulations.
  • Interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to cultivate and steward long-term partnerships with donors, sponsors, and stakeholders.
  • Organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to use data and metrics to measure and improve performance and impact.
