Staff and Faculty Veterinarian Opportunities

Primate Medicine and Biomedical Research

San Antonio, Texas | On-site

Bring your clinical judgment to a veterinary team caring for non-human primates and supporting infectious disease research. RPM ReSearch is partnering with an established research organization recruiting veterinarians for colony care and veterinary study support, with appointments matched to experience and qualifications.

Experienced primate veterinarians can contribute immediately while expanding their scientific collaborations. Clinicians entering research can build species-specific expertise through on-the-job training alongside experienced colleagues. The team welcomes strong candidates at different career stages, including residents completing training in summer 2027.

Why consider this opportunity

You will work with veterinarians, technicians, colony managers, behavior specialists, pathology, and staff trainers. Collaboration with principal investigators and study directors connects clinical decisions with research objectives. The program supports both federally funded and contract studies, with expanding high-containment capabilities creating future opportunities for veterinary involvement.

Your clinical leadership will influence animal care without routine responsibility for technical staff timecards and scheduling. Veterinarians report to the attending veterinarian and exercise delegated authority over animal care decisions, communicating closely with investigators and animal care teams.

What the work involves

Provide clinical care, anesthesia, surgery, and dentistry for non-human primates. Initial assignments are expected in rhesus macaque or marmoset areas, with exposure to other colonies through onboarding rotations.

Support breeding and colony health through reproductive and neonatal care, assessment of incoming animals, infectious disease surveillance, and participation in population-level decisions.

Support research studies according to your experience and developing interests. Study-focused assignments include animal care, investigator collaboration, documentation, and study coordination.

Contribute to protocol review and compliance, initially through veterinary consultation. IACUC membership is introduced later in onboarding, with veterinarians expected to rotate through service over time.

Teach and mentor technical staff, interns, and externs. Experienced veterinarians also help develop junior colleagues and contribute to collaborative scientific work.

Mornings generally focus on animal work; afternoons allow time for meetings, documentation, and follow-up. Study support involves more coordination and computer-based work than a primarily colony-focused assignment.

Training and the first 90 days

Early priorities are familiarity with SOPs, confidence in case management and surgery, and readiness to join shared on-call coverage. As you learn the program, you will begin identifying clinical or process improvements you can help lead. Training is available, but candidates should arrive with established basic veterinary skills.

Prior ABSL-3 or ABSL-4 experience is not required. All veterinarians develop some ABSL-3 proficiency for shared coverage. Future ABSL-4 assignments involve extended preparation, generally around a year, including at least six months partnering with experienced veterinarians before progressing toward independence. Assignment and progression depend on experience, readiness, and program needs.

The background we are seeking

A DVM or equivalent veterinary degree, solid hands-on clinical skills in anesthesia, surgery, and dentistry, and clear communication across clinical and scientific teams.

An informed interest in research and willingness to work with infectious disease models in containment settings. Prior experience with any non-human primate species is valued; reproductive and neonatal care experience is particularly useful for colony work.

For staff appointments, laboratory animal or primate experience is welcome. Experienced companion animal or emergency clinicians may also be considered when they can explain a convincing motivation and readiness for a research career.

For faculty appointments, active U.S. veterinary licensure and evidence of independent clinical judgment, scientific contribution, mentoring, and leadership. Board certification supports faculty consideration; candidates without certification may demonstrate readiness through publications, presentations, and national professional organization involvement.

Sustained academic experience and collaborative grant or publication contributions strengthen a faculty candidacy. Independent research is not required; scientific collaboration is expected. Internationally trained veterinarians may be considered for a staff scientist appointment with professional development toward U.S. equivalency and licensure. Appointment eligibility and sponsorship are reviewed individually.

The clinical environment

This is an on-campus role with shared weekend and holiday on-call coverage. Work includes outdoor animal areas in Texas heat and containment settings requiring protective equipment. You should be comfortable collaborating across teams and adapting to staffing constraints and facilities and equipment of varying ages.

Compensation and timing

Compensation will reflect clinical experience, research background, credentials, and appointment level. Where appropriate, offers may include a defined salary adjustment upon board certification. Start dates are flexible for the right candidate, including consideration of residents finishing in 2027.

San Antonio offers a metropolitan setting with neighborhoods and cultural amenities to explore outside work. RPM ReSearch can help you consider location fit alongside the clinical and career opportunity.
