The School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) is known for its research in areas such as:


  • Vector-borne diseases
  • The SVM focuses on developing assays to detect pathogens that infect animals and are transmitted by mosquitos and ticks. 
  • Aquatic animal health
  • The Aquatic Animal Medicine Program (AAMP) at the SVM conducts research on diseases of aquatic wildlife and aquaculture fish. The SVM also has an aquatic laboratory and marine center with freshwater and saltwater aquariums. 
  • Zoonoses and public health
  • The SVM collaborates with the SGU School of Medicine's Department of Public Health and Preventive Medicine on research in this area. 
  • Comparative medicine
  • The SVM's research includes comparative genetics, stem-cell research, and genetically engineered animal models. 


The SVM's research is collaborative and involves DVM students. The SVM offers a variety of research opportunities for students, including:


  • Island Veterinary Scholars Program (IVSP): A summer program that focuses on hypothesis-based research
  • Veterinary Student Research Initiative (VSRI): A program that offers one-on-one faculty mentorship and a distinction in research on transcripts

Our University (SGU) invites accomplished professionals in veterinary pathology to join our exceptional academic team as an Associate Professor of Pathobiology. This full-time position within the Department of Pathobiology emphasizes teaching, research, diagnostics, and student mentorship.

Key Responsibilities


Instructional Activities

  • Deliver dynamic lectures on general, systemic, and clinical pathology, as well as other topics in veterinary medicine.
  • Provide hands-on instruction in necropsy techniques, clinical skills, and Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs).
  • Actively participate in curriculum development, including creating engaging course content and rigorous examination materials.
  • Offer additional academic support and guidance to students, maintaining open office hours and creating meaningful faculty-student interactions.


Research and Scholarly Activities

  • Lead collaborative research initiatives in areas such as vector-borne and zoonotic diseases, parasitology, bacteriology, aquatic animal health, and pathology.
  • Mentor graduate and veterinary students, fostering their academic growth and research skills.
  • Present findings at conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals to uphold SGU’s reputation for innovation and academic excellence.


Diagnostic and Service Contributions

  • Provide diagnostic necropsy and biopsy services, utilizing cutting-edge digital microscopy systems.
  • Engage with the local community through outreach programs such as One Health One Medicine and CaribVet, reinforcing SGU’s commitment to regional health and sustainability.
  • Participate in faculty senate meetings, departmental evaluations, and special committees to support SGU’s mission.

Qualifications

  • Required:
  • DVM with ACVP or ECVP board certification in anatomic pathology or board eligibility.
  • Preferred:
  • MSc or PhD in a related field.
