The Opportunity

As the Drafting and Engineering Lead, you will take on a hands-on leadership role, leading a small drafting team, working closely with the shop, and supporting machining and fabrication driven design decisions. You’ll collaborate with leadership and production teams to keep designs aligned with how work is built, while providing light project coordination and supporting Goodman Steel’s design-build work.


As the company continues to grow, this role gives you the opportunity to influence how drafting and engineering support fabrication and machining by improving communication, clarifying expectations, and helping teams work together more effectively. This role suits someone who enjoys mentoring others, staying close to the work, and seeing designs carried through to finished steel.


 

Key Responsibilities

As the Engineering Lead, you will work collaboratively and are responsible for:


1. Technical Leadership & Team Support

• Guide and support the daily work of engineers and drafters, offering mentorship and troubleshooting as needed.

• Review and contribute to engineering designs, fabrication plans, and machining processes, collaborating between departments to ensure smooth project flow.

• Promote a culture of continuous improvement and innovation in engineering practices and processes.


2. Project & Process Improvement

• Lead assigned engineering projects from concept to completion, ensuring timely delivery, high quality standards and alignment with strategic goals.

• Assist with scope definition, scheduling, resource planning, and risk assessments for current and upcoming jobs.

• Work cross-functionally with fabrication, machining and leadership teams to drive operational improvements.

• Identify opportunities to improve quality, workflow, and cost-efficiency across engineering operations.



3. Client Coordination & Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Serve as a technical point of contact on projects, ensuring client needs align with their specifications and industry standards.

• Collaborate closely with operations, leadership, and front-line teams to meet project milestones and customer expectations.

• Participate in business development opportunities, including representing Goodman Steel at industry events like SIMSA.

• Maintains knowledge of new trends, developments, technologies, and best practices, applying this knowledge to continually improve production efficiency.


 

Qualifications

As the Drafting and Engineering Lead, you will possess the following qualities:


The Essentials (Hard Skills):

  • Post-secondary education in engineering, engineering technology, drafting, or a related technical discipline; mechanical or structural background preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in steel fabrication, machining, manufacturing, or fabrication-driven design environments.
  • Strong understanding of constructability, fabrication methods, and how design decisions impact shop execution.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, or overseeing drafters or technical design staff.
  • Ability to review, develop, and guide fabrication-ready drawings, layouts, and design concepts.
  • Experience supporting projects through coordination, scheduling input, and technical problem-solving in a fast-paced environment.
  • Professional Engineering (P.Eng.) designation is considered an asset but is not required.
  • Additional certifications in Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, or PMP would be considered an asset.

  • Strong communicator who can translate technical concepts clearly between drafting, engineering, fabrication, and machining teams.

  • Organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage competing priorities and keep work moving forward.
  • Comfortable making decisions, providing direction, and addressing issues in a respectful, solutions-focused manner.
  • Adaptable and improvement-minded, with a willingness to evolve processes as the business grows.
