Hughes Collective is pleased to present an exciting opportunity on behalf of our client.

Position Title: Chief Financial Officer

Location: Saskatoon-based | Quarterly travel as needed to Pinehouse and other locations

Employment Type: Full-Time | Executive Leadership

Our Client

PBN Construction is more than a construction company. Proudly Indigenous-owned, PBN has grown from a northern-focused operation into a diversified organization with a strong presence across Saskatchewan. From earthworks to building complex multi-million-dollar infrastructure projects, PBN is known for reliability, safety, and innovation.

Following a successful acquisition, PBN has grown by a factor of 3 in just two years. With growth comes new challenges: scaling systems, formalizing project controls, managing a large equipment fleet, and ensuring strong financial discipline. PBN is seeking a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to bring structure, oversight, and strategy to this next phase of growth.

The Opportunity

The CFO will be more than a number-cruncher,  they will be a strategic voice at the leadership table, a builder of systems, and a mentor to a growing finance team. This is a role for someone who thrives in complexity: one day rolling up their sleeves to problem-solve in accounts payable, the next day preparing financial models for a multi-million-dollar fleet investment, and the day after that presenting to the Board with clarity and confidence.

The CFO will bring balance by pairing entrepreneurial spirit with financial discipline, operational urgency with strategic foresight. They will work alongside a seasoned executive team that values honesty, integrity, and collaborative decision-making. Most importantly, the CFO will help ensure that PBN’s financial stewardship translates into sustained growth, stronger community impact, and long-term stability for an Indigenous-owned construction leader.

Key Responsibilities

As the Chief Financial Officer, you will work collaboratively and are responsible for:

1. Financial Leadership & Strategy

·      Lead financial planning, budgeting, forecasting, and analysis for a $50M+ operation.

·      Provide the CEO and Board with accurate, timely financial insights to drive decision-making.

·      Balance growth opportunities with risk management, ensuring financial sustainability.

·      Build business cases for equipment acquisitions and capital investments.

2. Operational Oversight & Controls

·      Oversee Finance, HR, IT, Procurement, Administration, and Facilities functions.

·      Strengthen internal controls, policies, and reporting systems across all divisions.

·      Align financial practices with project controls to ensure accuracy in costing, margins, and performance reporting.

·      Liaise with banks, auditors, insurers, and regulatory bodies to maintain compliance and transparency.

3. Team Development & Mentorship

·      Lead and grow a finance team currently spanning payroll, AP/AR, and junior accounting roles.

·      Coach and mentor staff, fostering accountability, capability, and cross-training.

·      Create clarity in roles, expectations, and processes while supporting professional growth.

·      Build a collaborative culture where financial acumen is understood across departments.

4. Executive Collaboration & Community Stewardship

·      Serve as a key voice on the executive team, contributing to strategic decisions with honesty and integrity.

·      Partner closely with operations and project controls to align financial discipline with field execution.

·      Represent PBN with professionalism in meetings with Board members, community leaders, and stakeholders.

·      Ensure financial stewardship reflects PBN’s Indigenous ownership and responsibility to community wealth-building.

Qualifications

As the Executive Director, you will possess the following qualities:

  • CPA designation required.
  • 10–15 years of progressive financial leadership, ideally within construction or a related heavy industry.
  • Strong understanding of construction accounting, project costing, and contracts.
  • Proven track record with budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling at $50M+ scale.
  • Comfort leading both transactional work and high-level strategy.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement systems and internal controls in a growing organization.
  • Experience mentoring teams and building cross-functional alignment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial software (QuickBooks experience an asset).

Attributes & Mindset:

  • Integrity above all else, a truth-teller who communicates openly and directly.
  • Willingness to roll up sleeves and pitch in when needed.
  • Solution-oriented, with the ability to bring not just problems but answers to the table.
  • Strong presence at the executive table, collaborative, logical, and decisive.
  • Respectful of PBN’s Indigenous ownership and community commitments.
  • Steady and reliable, with the energy and appetite to help lead growth for the long term.
