About Neighborhood Funders Group (NFG)
The mission of Neighborhood Funders Group (NFG) is to organize philanthropy to support grassroots power building so that Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) communities and low-income communities thrive. Together with our member network of over 100 grantmaking organizations, NFG engages philanthropic institutions and their staff across the U.S. to accelerate racial, gender, economic, disability, and climate justice by moving more philanthropic dollars to local organizing and power building led by BIPOC communities, low-income communities and workers, rural communities, LGBTQIA+ and gender non-conforming people, women, and immigrants.
NFG offers a political home for funders to learn directly from movement leaders on issues such as gentrification and displacement, multiracial rural organizing, and the changing landscape of workers’ rights. Our programming goes beyond learning to action - we call on funders to co-conspire to support transformative movements, collaborating and aligning to advance justice. All of our programming is grounded in our histories, strengths, and struggles, and centers Black, Indigenous, and people of color leaders in places, movements, and philanthropy.
NFG’s staff of about 25 people, located across the country, are aligned in their commitment to NFG’s mission and bring experience as former and current grantmakers, organizers, and advocates. This deep grounding gives staff a unique understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing members as they work to advance equity within philanthropic institutions.
Our core programs - Integrated Rural Strategies Group, Democratizing Development, Funders for a Just Economy, Philanthropy Forward, and Midwest Organizing Infrastructure Funders - all lift up community voices and place-based strategies. Additionally, NFG houses two major initiatives: the Amplify Fund, a place-focused pooled fund, and The LIFT Fund, a fiscally sponsored project.
In this divisive political time, NFG remains deeply committed to leadership that is unapologetic in the face of authoritarianism and willing to take risks in service of the communities we represent. Internally, we strive to live our values in our organizational culture. We are a leader-full organization that focuses on staff strengths and shared leadership. NFG staff unionized in 2022, and future leadership will continue to uphold our commitment to a workplace that respects and values the dignity of all staff. In 2025, NFG implemented its first Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) with staff union CWA Local 9415 with the full support of our board and management team.
The Vice President of Finance and Operations will serve as the organization’s internal financial leader and partner to its fractional CFO team. The VP will lead strategic finance, budgeting, and operational systems that align with NFG’s mission and values. They will act as a bridge between finance and program teams, strengthening internal capacity, improving access to financial systems, and ensuring clarity and accountability across the organization. This role sits on our Senior Management Team, joining our Co-Presidents and Vice President of Programs and Membership & Engagement, and is pivotal in helping us set our internal culture and operationalize our Theory of Change. Our Theory of Change articulates our values and our long term goal - philanthropic assets are liberated so that BIPOC communities and low-income communities have power to self-determine.
Importantly, this is a bridge role, strengthening and building upon NFG’s current mix of in-house and outsourced support across finance, operations, and HR. And yet, today it is clear that NFG has outgrown some of these systems and structures, as an organization that now manages assets of over $20M. While NFG has strong fiscal controls and sophisticated financial reporting, the next phase of infrastructure development will focus on building more capacity and integration of finance and operations in the context of the organization’s overall mission and theory of change, including expanded regranting and fiscal sponsorship management. Currently, this role manages the annual audit and coordinates several contractors including an external accounting firm, and a contracted Finance Assistant. Long-term, the candidate for this role will play a central role in determining our infrastructure staffing and consultant needs.
The successful candidate will have values that are clearly aligned with NFG’s, and experience setting up or scaling infrastructure at an organization in a way that reflects how values live through operations and financial management. At the outset, the incoming Vice President of Finance and Operations will be tasked with assessing the body of work in finance, operations, and human resources to develop a vision, key roles, and staffing needs so the work can be held by a small department. Together with the Senior Management Team, this person will shape that department and stage its realization. We are looking for someone with the experience to help us assess our future infrastructure needs while managing today’s work needs.
NFG is at a time full of possibility and potential for the organization, and it is an incredible time for a new leader who wants to be a part of investing in the long-term success and sustainability of the organization to join the team.
Essential Functions
The Vice President of Finance and Operations will strengthen NFG’s internal financial capacity by ensuring staff have access to systems and data that support transparency and shared decision-making. They will manage the relationship with NFG’s fractional finance partner, ensuring strong communication, accountability, and alignment with organizational goals. This includes translating financial analysis into clear, values-based storytelling and strategic decision-making in partnership with the Co-Presidents.
