The Role  

Our client is a Canadian company with over 50 years of experience, specializing in monitoring systems, providing high-quality products, engineering, and customer support, along with services such as maintenance, training, and consulting. Currently, seeking to add to the team a Field Hydraulics and Pneumatics Assembly Technician, who is able to work in different client sites around Canada and the United States.


This position primarily offers daytime shifts; however, the availability to be on-call when needed is necessary, as well as overtime availability.


The successful candidate would likely be a Millwright adjacent with a background that includes control of motors and engines with a mix of mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical troubleshooting and repair skills. The Pneumatic / Hydraulic technician sometimes must troubleshoot and diagnose some electrical issues related to the pneumatic/hydraulic system they were called out to fix.


Responsibilities 

  • Maintaining, repairing, and troubleshooting hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems and components in various marine and vessel equipment. Strong mechanical experience.
  • Performing routine inspections, replacing defective parts, and ensuring all work complies with safety regulations.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing, assembly, and testing processes.
  • Ability to follow technical procedures, specifications, and standards to assemble, test, and calibrate components.
  • Experience creating and maintaining technical documentation, including procedures and corrective actions.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, drawings, and diagrams
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify and escalate documentation discrepancies. Able to identify errors or omissions in existing documentation, including circuit issues, grammatical errors, and dimensional inconsistencies. Make appropriate changes to such documentation, and forward change-marked documentation to engineering for updates.
  • Interpreting client blueprints and maintaining strong and professional relationships while working at clients' sites.
  • Determine the cause of failure and test fluid power, flow control, and automation technologies.
  • In-shop work such as: Component overhaul, including disassembly, inspection, identification of unusual wear or damage to major parts, installation of overhaul kit parts, reassembly, and testing, both in our facility and on-board ships. Completion of inspection, test, and service reports.
  • Participate in the repair and refit Estimation process by providing anticipated labour and parts suggestions to the Service Manager.
  • Mechanical installation of company equipment on board ships, sometimes including making various kinds of flexible and ridged pipe, hose, and tubing connections.


Requirements   

  • 5+ years of experience with hydraulics and pneumatics. Excellent troubleshooting and mechanical aptitude.
  • Electrical systems, as well as mechanical equipment, experience. Working knowledge of manufacturing, assembly, and testing processes.
  • Fluid power parts and marine systems, including propulsion control knowledge.
  • Familiarity with the use, operation, and care of: Manual metal turning lathe, table saw, circular saw, hand drill, router, hole punches, metal break bender, hydraulic press, drill press, tube bending and flaring tools, basic test meters and gauges, mechanic’s hand tools, electrical and hydraulic power sources, and soldering equipment.
  • Proven troubleshooting, disassembly, repair, and testing of hydraulic/pneumatic systems experience
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English, with technical writing experience.
  • Ability to follow technical procedures, specifications, and standards to assemble, test, and calibrate components.
  • Familiarity with digital/analog circuits and tools is an asset.
  • A valid driver’s license for local travel and the ability to travel internationally, including to the US. A clean driver's record and ability to operate a company vehicle as required.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, maintaining productivity and quality standards, and as part of a team, with strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Must provide CSA-approved safety footwear in good condition; additional PPE will be provided as needed.
  • Required to supply standard mechanic’s hand tools; specialized tools and equipment are provided by the company.
  • Basic computer proficiency, including email communication, document handling, and use of office equipment (printer/scanner). Experience creating and maintaining technical documentation, including procedures and corrective actions.
  • Access to a mobile device or camera capable of capturing and sharing clear, high-quality images for documentation purposes.


Compensation 

  • $45 to $50 an hour, depending on experience.
