Compensation: $135,000–$155,000


POSITION SUMMARY

We are hiring a Senior Mechanical Engineer to support complex federal facilities and infrastructure projects in Norfolk, Virginia.

This position is an opportunity for an experienced Mechanical PE to apply deep technical expertise across the design and renovation of mission-critical government facilities. You’ll work on projects ranging from HVAC and utility systems to laboratories, waterfront structures, medical facilities, command centers, and large-scale central utility systems.


WHAT YOU’LL DO

You’ll provide mechanical engineering expertise for major and complex federal design and construction projects. Typical systems and project areas include:

  • Plumbing systems
  • Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems
  • Digital data controls, instrumentation, and control systems
  • Chilled water systems
  • Steam and hot water systems
  • Compressed gas systems
  • Natural gas systems
  • Fuel distribution and storage
  • Energy conservation and conversion systems
  • Renewable energy and energy-efficient systems and studies
  • Power distribution and generation systems
  • Large utility plants and distribution systems
  • Air pollution control systems
  • Water and wastewater control systems
  • Process and chemical process piping
  • Piping and instrumentation diagrams
  • Security controls
  • Anti-Terrorism and Force Protection (ATFP) requirements related to mechanical design


Projects may include multi-story office buildings, steam plants, hospitals, housing, manufacturing facilities, training facilities, waterfront structures, laboratories, command and control centers, hangars, medical facilities, and large, complex utility systems.


You’ll also:

  • Develop engineering designs and plans for mechanical utility systems, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems.
  • Apply mechanical engineering principles, methodologies, and computer-based engineering tools to complex construction and infrastructure projects.
  • Coordinate mechanical designs with related architectural and engineering disciplines.
  • Prepare written engineering analyses, consolidate technical findings, and evaluate recommendations and supporting information.
  • Present proposed designs and study findings to project stakeholders.
  • Apply budgeting, planning, and project management techniques to engineering assignments.
  • Coordinate the work of others and lead teams as required.
  • Follow applicable safety policies and guidance and properly use required personal protective equipment.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

You’ll bring:

  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration in Mechanical Engineering. This is required.
  • A minimum of 10 years of professional mechanical engineering experience involving code-compliant facilities design for new construction, including renovation design experience. This is required.
  • A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited institution. This is required.
  • Professional knowledge and demonstrated ability to apply mechanical engineering theories, concepts, principles, computer system applications, and methodologies to a wide range of construction projects and mechanical utility systems.
  • Experience developing engineering designs and plans for mechanical utility systems, including heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration.
  • Knowledge of DoD and Navy guide specifications, criteria, policies, industry codes, standards, and accepted mechanical engineering design practices.
  • Knowledge of local, state, federal, and foreign-country laws, codes, and statutory requirements affecting mechanical engineering design throughout the supported regional area.
  • Understanding of related architectural and engineering disciplines and how they affect mechanical engineering design.
  • Experience with Autodesk software, Microsoft Office products, mechanical engineering design and analysis software, and applicable DoD computer systems and software.
  • Ability to document engineering analyses in writing, consolidate the findings of others, and evaluate technical recommendations and facts.
  • Ability to make oral presentations covering proposed designs and study results.
  • Knowledge of budgeting, planning, and project management techniques, including the ability to coordinate the work of others and lead teams.
  • Knowledge of and full compliance with applicable safety policies, guidance, and PPE requirements.

  • American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) standards
  • ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC)
  • American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) standards
  • ASHRAE 189.1
  • ASHRAE 90.1
  • ASHRAE 62.1
  • Applicable ASHRAE handbooks
  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes, including NFPA 54, NFPA 58, NFPA 90A, and NFPA 96
  • Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA) standards
  • International Mechanical Code (IMC)
  • International Plumbing Code (IPC)
  • International Building Code (IBC)


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

You’ll need the ability to:

  • Stand, walk, kneel, and crouch.
  • Remain in a stationary position for at least 60% of the time.
  • Operate standard office equipment, including computers, copy machines, and phones.
  • Use your hands to handle or control objects and reach with your hands and arms.
  • Lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Communicate clearly so others can understand.
  • Understand spoken communication.
  • Communicate both in person and by telephone.
  • See details of objects located more than a few feet away.


WORK ENVIRONMENT AND SAFETY

  • Must be comfortable working both indoors and outdoors with exposure to varying weather conditions.
  • May occasionally need to navigate rough terrain, work in confined spaces, and work at heights.
  • Required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary.
  • May encounter hazards or contaminants while performing work assignments.


COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Compensation range: $135,000–$155,000
