Director of Claims & Risk Management

Compensation: $245,000 - $265,000+ base, plus bonus

Location: Livingston, NJ (Essex County). Hybrid, 3 days in office and 2 days remote.

Role Summary

Our client is an established independent insurance brokerage that represents high-profile clients. They're hiring a Director of Claims & Risk Management to run the entire claims function across General Liability, Property, Casualty, and Auto.

You'll oversee the insurance programs in place for clients, hold carriers and third-party administrators accountable for their work, and lead claim reviews directly with clients. You'll also decide how the claims department is built, measured, and run.

Your law degree matters here. You'll support claims litigation, work alongside defense counsel, and give the leadership team limited in-house legal guidance. It's a secondary part of the job, but a real one.

You'll sit on the leadership team and help set company-wide goals.

Responsibilities

  • Build the claims department's structure, goals, and standards to hit loss cost targets while raising service quality.
  • Monitor carrier and third-party administrator performance, and lead claim reviews with clients.
  • Support claims litigation by working with defense counsel, and provide limited in-house legal guidance to leadership.
  • Work with Account Executives on claims advisories and coverage issues.
  • Create claims reporting and key performance measures, and bring in technology that makes claims handling faster and clearer.
  • Hire, develop, and lead a high-performing claims team, including succession planning and mentoring.

Qualifications

  • Law degree (Juris Doctor) required. Bar admission is not required.
  • 15+ years of progressive insurance experience managing complex claims and coverage issues.
  • 8+ years of leadership experience, with a record of designing and running strategic programs.
  • New Jersey Property & Casualty license, or the ability to obtain one shortly after hire.
  • Bachelor's degree required. Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) or another professional designation strongly preferred.
  • Applied Epic experience preferred, plus strong analytical and communication skills.

Why Apply?

The pay is strong: $245,000 to $265,000+ base plus bonus. Benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance, a 401(k), 20 days of PTO plus 9 holidays, 2 remote days a week, and a free onsite gym.

You'd own the claims function end to end and have a real voice on the leadership team.
