Job Description: Pilot Plant Operator

Position Summary

The Pilot Plant Operator is responsible for all operational aspects of the plant during the assigned shift, including personnel coordination, equipment operation, and safety compliance. This role ensures the safe and efficient startup, operation, and shutdown of chemical plant equipment from inside the control room.

The Operator supports the Shift Supervisor and plant management, may provide direction to field operators, and contributes to operations, maintenance (O&M) activities, plant improvement projects, and third-party interface activities.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Plant Operations & Control Room Duties

  • Safely start up, operate, and shut down plant equipment in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Monitor, operate, and adjust equipment from within the control room to maintain safe and efficient plant conditions.
  • Monitor and record plant operating parameters, taking corrective action as necessary.
  • Detect, diagnose, and respond to faulty equipment or abnormal operating conditions.
  • Monitor plant air and water emissions, ensuring compliance with acceptable limits.
  • Immediately notify the Shift Supervisor and/or management of unusual or abnormal situations.

Field Operations & Coordination

  • Direct actions of field operators during startup, shutdown, and abnormal situations.
  • Oversee equipment isolation, including opening, locking, and tagging, in accordance with LOTO procedures.
  • Perform or direct minor maintenance activities during scheduled and unscheduled maintenance periods.

Safety & Compliance

  • Participate in scheduled safety meetings and required training.
  • Ensure thorough shift turnover, including communication of special orders, unusual conditions, and operating log review.
  • Perform tests on critical safety systems when directed.
  • Maintain strict adherence to plant safety procedures and proper use of all safety equipment.
  • Safely operate site vehicles as required.

Reporting & Documentation

  • Maintain accurate logs and documentation of plant operations, parameters, and events.
  • Provide periodic operational reports to the Shift Supervisor and plant management.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and report conditions likely to develop into operational or safety issues.

Housekeeping & Support

  • Maintain a clean and orderly work area at all times.
  • Assist in training site staff as directed.
  • Handle additional tasks as assigned by the Shift Supervisor or plant management.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum 5+ years of industry experience required.
  • Experience operating process demonstration units preferred.

Technical Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of mechanical, instrumentation, and electrical equipment.
  • Knowledge of equipment isolation and tagging procedures (LOTO).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of chemical/process demonstration unit operations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.

  • Ability to make competent decisions in emergency situations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to understand and follow policies, procedures, and instructions.
  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and teamwork abilities.

Physical & Additional Requirements

  • Must be able to work 24/7 rotating shift schedules as required.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs unassisted; assistance required for lifting over 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to pass an MVR check.
  • Steel-toe shoes are required.
  • This position is classified as safety-sensitive.
  • Normal business hours are between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., but shift schedules will vary.
  • Dress code: Collared T-shirts and jeans.
