Edgewater Technical Associates is seeking qualified candidates for an Instrumentation Engineer/Designer opportunity in Johnson City, TN.
Position Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Instrumentation Engineer / Designer to join our Johnson City Project Office team. This position is responsible for the engineering, design, specification, and documentation of instrumentation and control systems for industrial projects.
The Instrumentation Engineer / Designer will work closely with process, mechanical, piping, electrical, controls, and project engineering disciplines to develop safe, reliable, constructible, and cost-effective designs. The role may support projects from early conceptual and front-end engineering through detailed design, construction, commissioning, and startup.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop instrumentation engineering and design deliverables for industrial projects from conceptual design through detailed engineering.
- Prepare and maintain instrument indexes, I/O lists, instrument data sheets, specifications, and procurement packages.
- Review Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) and provide instrumentation and controls input.
- Develop instrument loop diagrams, wiring diagrams, hook-up details, installation details, and junction box schedules.
- Develop and review instrument location plans, cable routing plans, control system architecture drawings, and panel layouts.
- Specify field instrumentation including pressure, temperature, flow, level, analytical, control valve, and related measurement/control devices.
- Perform instrument sizing and selection as required, including control valves, flow elements, and other instrumentation.
- Develop instrument installation requirements, material take-offs, and construction packages.
- Coordinate instrument power, signal, grounding, communications, and interface requirements with electrical and controls disciplines.
- Coordinate instrumentation requirements with process, piping, mechanical, civil/structural, and other engineering disciplines.
- Review vendor drawings, technical submittals, quotations, and equipment packages for compliance with project requirements.
- Support development and review of PLC, DCS, SIS, SCADA, and other control system interfaces as applicable.
- Participate in client meetings, design reviews, model reviews, constructability reviews, and project coordination meetings.
- Develop field sketches and incorporate field conditions into engineering and design documents.
- Provide technical support during construction, commissioning, loop checks, startup, and troubleshooting.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable client standards, project specifications, codes, and industry practices.
- Maintain project documentation and complete assigned work within established project budgets and schedules.
- Coordinate with project managers and discipline leads regarding scope, schedule, technical issues, and changes.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Controls Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline for engineering-focused candidates; or relevant technical degree, design training, and equivalent industry experience.
- 5+ years of relevant experience in instrumentation engineering and/or instrumentation design within an engineering consulting, EPC, industrial, manufacturing, chemical, energy, or related environment.
- Working knowledge of industrial instrumentation, measurement principles, control valves, and control systems.
- Ability to read, interpret, and develop P&IDs, instrument loop drawings, wiring diagrams, installation details, and related engineering documentation.
- Experience developing instrument specifications and data sheets.
- Understanding of analog, discrete, and digital instrumentation signals and industrial communication protocols.
- Familiarity with PLC, DCS, SIS, and/or SCADA systems and their interfaces with field instrumentation.
- Knowledge of hazardous-area requirements and instrumentation installation practices.
- Strong multidisciplinary coordination and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and priorities in a project-driven engineering services environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and applicable engineering/design software.
