Edgewater Technical Associates is seeking qualified candidates for a Safety Director opportunity in Oak Ridge, TN.

 

Position Summary:

The Safety Director is responsible for the leadership, implementation, and continuous improvement of the integrated Safety and Quality Programs for a nuclear program involving advanced manufacturing and inspection operations. This position provides strategic direction and governance to ensure that safety and quality requirements are fully embedded into work planning, manufacturing processes, inspection activities, and organizational culture. The Safety Director serves as a senior authority and advisor to executive leadership, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and alignment between safety and quality objectives.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide overall leadership and accountability for the site Safety Program, ensuring effective integration with the Quality Program.
  • Establish, implement, and maintain safety policies, standards, and processes that align with quality assurance requirements and regulatory expectations.
  • Ensure safety principles are incorporated into manufacturing, inspection, maintenance, and engineering activities through structured work control and quality processes.
  • Partner with Quality leadership to align corrective action management, root-cause analysis, lessons learned, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Oversee hazard analysis, work planning, and operational readiness activities to ensure safe and compliant execution of work.
  • Direct safety oversight of shop-floor operations, machinery, equipment installations, and inspection processes.
  • Ensure effective implementation of programs including machine safety, lockout/tagout, electrical safety, industrial hygiene, environmental compliance, and training.
  • Establish performance metrics and reporting for safety and quality program effectiveness; brief senior leadership on status, risks, and trends.
  • Lead investigations of significant incidents, near-misses, and quality-related safety issues; ensure corrective actions are timely and effective.
  • Serve as the primary interface with regulatory agencies, auditors, and oversight organizations for safety and quality matters.
  • Promote a strong safety and quality culture through leadership engagement, field presence, and accountability at all organizational levels.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Quality, or a related discipline; advanced degree preferred.
  • Extensive experience leading safety programs in manufacturing, industrial, or regulated environments.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating Safety and Quality Management Systems.
  • Strong working knowledge of applicable safety, health, environmental, and quality regulations and standards.
  • Proven leadership experience with authority over program implementation and organizational change.
  • Excellent communication, decision-making, and executive briefing skills.
  • Experience in nuclear, aerospace, defense, or other high-reliability industries.
  • Familiarity with quality assurance standards and corrective action programs.
  • Strong shop-floor and operational presence with the ability to influence engineering, operations, and inspection personnel.
  • Experience leading audits, assessments, and regulatory engagements.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement and high-performance safety culture.

  • Active Q Clearance (preferred) or ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance
