Job Title: Assistant Controller
Location: Elizabeth, New Jersey
Note: This is an in-office position, requiring 5 days a week on-site presence.
Position Overview:
We are a growing national transportation company based in Elizabeth, New Jersey, seeking an experienced and highly motivated Assistant Controller to join our team. As part of a dynamic, multi-state organization, this role offers significant exposure to a wide range of accounting and financial operations, providing a great opportunity for hands-on experience in a fast-paced and evolving environment.
The Assistant Controller will report directly to the Controller and play a crucial role in overseeing the financial operations for multiple divisions within the company. This position requires a strong focus on financial reporting, treasury management, accounts payable and vendor relations, and maintaining internal controls. The ideal candidate will also manage staff, support the Controller with financial and tax reporting, and ensure compliance with both legal and industry-specific guidelines.
Key Responsibilities:
- Financial Reporting:
- Prepare monthly consolidated financial statements and semi-annual US GAAP financial reports.
- Compile and review audit materials, financial compilations, and tax returns.
- Analyze and provide detailed commentary on weekly, monthly, and ad-hoc financial reports for management.
- Treasury & Cash Management:
- Manage treasury functions including weekly and monthly ACH payments, wire transfers, and positive pay.
- Oversee credit card, petty cash, debit card, and fuel card processes, as well as maintain multiple banking relationships.
- Division Financial Oversight:
- Perform in-depth financial analysis and commentary for each division's monthly financial results.
- Ensure accurate and timely reconciliations and resolve discrepancies in general ledger accounts.
- Internal Controls & Compliance:
- Develop and document accounting policies and business processes to strengthen internal controls across all divisions.
- Ensure compliance with industry regulations and local jurisdictional requirements, and prepare necessary reports for regulatory bodies.
- Oversee month-end close procedures and work to streamline and expedite the close process.
- Leadership & Team Collaboration:
- Provide leadership and guidance to the billing and operations shared service center.
- Foster a collaborative environment across departments, ensuring effective communication between teams and the Controller.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required.
- Previous experience as an Assistant Controller or Accounting Manager is essential.
- 1-2 years of experience in public accounting is a plus.
- A minimum of 7+ years of experience in both public and private accounting roles.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including VLOOKUP and pivot tables.
- Solid understanding of US GAAP and accounting principles.
- Hands-on experience with financial audits and intercompany consolidations.
- In-depth knowledge of revenue recognition principles, intercompany transactions, and related party transactions.
- Experience with Sage Intacct accounting software is preferred.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to process large volumes of data and identify patterns.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and communicate effectively with both staff and senior leadership.
- Ability to handle complex transactions, exercise sound judgment, and propose practical solutions.
- Experience with transitioning accounting systems and integrating new systems is an asset.
- Knowledge of the trucking industry and CCH Workpaper Manager is a plus.
- A CPA or other professional financial certifications are preferred.
