Position Summary
The Safety, Health & Environmental (SHE) Specialist is responsible for leading environmental, health, and safety activities at a tank car repair facility in Cleveland, TX. This role serves as the on-site EHS leader, ensuring compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other applicable regulations while supporting a growing hourly workforce. The position is best suited for an early-career or entry-level EHS manager who wants hands-on responsibility, daily engagement with operations, and the opportunity to grow professionally. The focus is heavily executional, training, inspections, incident response, and visible floor presence, rather than corporate-level policy writing.
What You’ll Do
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local EHS regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT, DEQ)
- Conduct weekly safety orientation and training for new hourly employees
- Maintain a strong on-the-floor presence to reinforce PPE usage and safe work practices
- Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions
- Coordinate and maintain safety records, logs, and regulatory reporting
- Conduct regular safety inspections, audits, and hazard assessments
- Implement and support site-level safety programs and initiatives
- Facilitate Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), behavior-based observations, and safety meetings
- Serve as the workers’ compensation claim coordinator and manage injury follow-up
- Coordinate industrial hygiene monitoring (noise, dust, fumes, chemical exposure)
- Ensure fire safety readiness, inspections, and employee training
- Manage PPE selection, purchasing, and compliance with applicable standards
- Oversee confined space entry, hazardous material response readiness, and emergency preparedness
- Maintain employee safety training records and certifications
- Promote environmental awareness and compliance across the site
- Partner with plant leadership on continuous improvement and risk reduction
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related field OR equivalent hands-on EHS experience
- Approximately 5-7 years of experience in an EHS role within an industrial or manufacturing environment
- Working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and safety compliance requirements
- Strong communication skills with the ability to train and influence hourly employees
- Comfortable performing hands-on, day-to-day safety activities
- Organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities
- Willingness to work onsite full-time and remain highly visible on the plant floor
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in repair, manufacturing, or heavy industrial environments
- Exposure to workers’ compensation coordination and incident management
- Familiarity with industrial hygiene concepts (certification not required)
- Safety certifications such as CSP or CIH (preferred, not required)
- Desire for growth and development into more senior EHS leadership roles
