Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels (YMOW) has recently celebrated 50 years of providing nutritious meals, social contact, aging in place supports and other services to the homebound, ill and disabled senior neighbors in eastern Washtenaw County to enable them to enjoy healthier, safer, and more independent lives.


Reporting to the Operations Director, the full-time Volunteer Coordinator will engage in activities to identify, recruit, and maintain volunteers in support of all aspects of YMOW’s operations. 


The primary work location is YMOW’s office. Occasional evening or weekend hours are required. 


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Volunteer Coordination 

  • Develop systems to recruit, maintain, train, onboard, and engage volunteers
  • Develop meaningful engagement opportunities for community members, students, interns, corporate groups, including in-person or virtual activities that align with needs, priorities, and goals of the volunteer and the organization
  • Engage the group of 300+ current volunteers while inspiring additional volunteers to join the mission
  • Coordinate and assist in ongoing supervision of volunteers, including interns and students
  • Develop systems for staff to effectively supervise and manage volunteers, including assisting with planning and managing volunteer orientation, training, recognition, and reporting
  • Conduct required background and reference checks; maintain files for compliance and audits, and prepare reports
  • Develop and prepare educational materials for volunteer training and continuous engagement
  • Develop quarterly volunteer newsletter; work with Development & Marketing Manager to design and share relevant social media posts 
  • Respond to volunteer inquiries in a prompt and professional manner
  • Create, maintain, and update volunteer records including personal profiles, schedules, hour records, onboarding checklists, and regular training activities
  • Report data and success of volunteer program
  • Thank and recognize volunteers during events, Volunteer Appreciation Week and Month, newsletter spotlights, and Volunteer of the Quarter award
  • Deliver meals to clients when needed


Outreach, Fundraising & Development

  • Develop and maintain community, university, and corporate partnerships
  • Coordinate and conduct presentations and/or tours for community, university, and corporate partnerships designated to promote the mission of YMOW, recruit volunteers, or solicit donations
  • Engage and support volunteers to organize benefits and in-kind drives to mobilize support for organizational and client needs
  • Assist with grant writing activities related to volunteer management
  • Assist with planning and coordinating small fundraising activities designed for volunteer involvement

Required:

  • Two to five years of experience in a non-profit setting with a proven track record of successful project management.  
  • A minimum of one year of volunteer management experience leading and directing a diverse volunteer team. 
  • Ability to exercise a high degree of judgment and diplomacy as well as maintaining the highest integrity and ethics. 
  • Ability to work independently and participate as a member of a multidisciplinary team. 
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail. Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite and social media.


Preferred:

  • Education in health and human services. 
  • Knowledge of the geographic areas in Ypsilanti and the Eastern Washtenaw County service area. 
  • Experience and/or affinity for working with older adults and others in need. 
  • Knowledge of database systems such as Better Impact or other volunteer management software. 
  • Knowledge of Adobe Acrobat.


Salary and Benefits Information

This is a full-time, non-exempt (hourly) position that includes access to a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental and vision; paid vacation, sick days and holidays; 403b retirement plan, and short-term disability coverage. The salary range for this position is $40,000 - $50,000.
