JOB DESCRIPTION

We are seeking a highly analytical and proactive Controller to manage the company’s accounting operations and financial reporting. This role is ideal for a hands-on finance leader who thrives in both detailed transactional work and strategic business partnership.

The Controller will play a critical role in managing day-to-day accounting operations while also providing leadership with financial insights related to budgeting, forecasting, hiring impacts, and operational performance. Approximately 50% of the role will involve hands-on accounting responsibilities, requiring someone comfortable working “in the weeds” while maintaining a strategic mindset.

Reporting directly to the CEO, with partnership and mentorship support from the Contract CFO, this individual will help strengthen financial processes, improve reporting capabilities, and support future ERP implementation initiatives. The Controller will also serve as a member of the leadership team and work closely with the CEO/Owner (Kyle).


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Accounting Operations: Lead all day-to-day accounting activities, including month-end close, reconciliations, and financial reporting.

Month-End Close: Own and complete the monthly close process within one week while ensuring GAAP-compliant accounting accuracy.

Financial Leadership: Own the finance function and proactively provide financial insights to leadership for operational and strategic decision-making.

Job Costing & Manufacturing Accounting: Build and maintain job costing structures within a manufacturing environment, including BOMs, COGS, and labor allocations.

Budgeting & Forecasting: Lead budgeting, cash flow forecasting, and financial modeling efforts to improve visibility into business performance.

Executive Reporting: Create executive dashboards, weekly KPI reporting, and present monthly financials to leadership and the Board.

Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting accuracy, and operational efficiency.

ERP Leadership: Lead future ERP selection and implementation initiatives, with anticipated migration to NetSuite or similar systems within the next 12 months.

Cross-Functional Partnership: Collaborate with leadership and operational teams to evaluate financial impacts of business decisions, including hiring and operational investments.

System Management: Maintain and optimize current accounting systems, including QuickBooks Desktop.

Technical Execution: Utilize advanced Excel capabilities, including pivot tables and forecasting models, to analyze financial data and support reporting needs.

Administrative Finance Oversight: Manage additional finance-related administrative responsibilities including benefits, insurance, corporate filings, and board documentation.

Team Leadership: Manage and mentor the Accounting Clerk supporting AP, AR, and payroll functions.

External Partnerships: Serve as liaison with outside accounting firms and financial partners.

Small Company Environment: Comfortable operating in a lean, small-to-mid-sized business environment.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience: 5–10+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Leadership Background: Prior experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Senior Accounting Manager.
  • Manufacturing Expertise: Strong manufacturing accounting and job costing experience required.
  • Close Process Expertise: Demonstrated experience managing month-end close and accounting operations.
  • Technical Skills: Advanced Excel skills, including mandatory proficiency with pivot tables and forecasting analysis.
  • Accounting Software: Strong experience with QuickBooks Desktop is required.
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Accounting Knowledge: Strong understanding of GAAP and core accounting principles.
  • Leadership Experience: Experience managing at least one direct report.
  • Work Style: Ability to work independently, wear multiple hats, and operate effectively in a small-to-mid-sized company environment.
  • Analytical Capability: Strong budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling, and cash flow planning experience.
  • Ownership Mentality: Demonstrated initiative, accountability, and ability to proactively solve problems without constant oversight.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Certifications: CPA, CMA, or MBA preferred but not required.
  • ERP Systems: Experience with ERP implementation projects such as NetSuite, Great Plains, or Dynamics.
  • Board Reporting: Prior experience presenting financials to Boards or executive leadership teams.
  • Industry Experience: Industrial distribution or manufacturing environment experience strongly preferred.
  • Cost Accounting: Experience with cost accounting methodologies is highly valued.
  • Process Building: Comfort building financial processes and infrastructure from scratch.
  • Strategic Mindset: Ability to balance controller-level accounting rigor with forward-looking strategic finance support.


COMPENSATION

  • Base Salary: $130k–$170k/year
  • Bonus/Profit Sharing: Eligible for bonus and profit-sharing opportunities

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Location: Bothell / Seattle, WA
  • Schedule: Standard business hours with flexibility; no rigid core hours
  • Work Arrangement: Preferred onsite initially; hybrid flexibility may be considered later based on business needs
  • Environment: Fast-paced, hands-on, collaborative manufacturing environment
