The Opportunity
The Underwriter is responsible for evaluating, approving, and managing risk across a merchant portfolio within the payments and merchant acquiring industry. This role supports the onboarding of new merchants, ongoing portfolio risk management, and underwriting-related operational functions. The ideal candidate has strong experience assessing merchant creditworthiness, fraud exposure, chargeback risk, and overall business viability while balancing growth objectives with risk management requirements. Responsibilities include reviewing merchant applications, financial statements, processing history, and supporting documentation, underwriting approximately 50 new merchant IDs (MIDs) per month, monitoring merchant activity, performing TSYS debit reconciliations, processing ticketing requests, and recommending risk mitigation strategies when appropriate. Success in this role requires sound underwriting judgment, strong analytical skills, experience with industry-specific systems, and a thorough understanding of compliance and payment network requirements.

Responsibilities
· Review and underwrite merchant applications, financial statements, processing history, and supporting documentation to assess overall risk and creditworthiness.
· Approve, decline, or condition merchant accounts based on established underwriting policies and risk tolerance.
· Underwrite approximately 50 new merchant IDs (MIDs) per month across a variety of industries and processing environments.
· Evaluate merchant credit risk, fraud exposure, chargeback potential, and operational risk factors.
· Recommend and implement risk mitigation strategies, including rolling reserves, funding delays, processing limits, volume caps, and other protective controls.
· Monitor merchant activity and portfolio performance to identify emerging risks, unusual transaction patterns, and potential fraud concerns.
· Perform TSYS debit reconciliations and support operational underwriting functions within the platform.
· Process underwriting and risk-related ticket requests accurately and within established service levels.
· Conduct KYC, KYB, AML, OFAC, and related compliance reviews as part of the underwriting process.
· Review chargeback activity, ACH returns, and processing trends to identify areas of concern and recommend corrective actions.
· Collaborate with sales, operations, risk, and support teams to resolve underwriting and merchant-related issues.
· Maintain accurate underwriting documentation and ensure adherence to internal policies, card brand requirements, and regulatory standards.
· Support ongoing portfolio reviews and assist with investigations involving merchant behavior, financial performance, or risk exposure.
· Contribute to process improvements, underwriting consistency, and portfolio quality initiatives.
Requirements
· 2+ years of underwriting experience within merchant acquiring, payments, fintech, or an ISO environment.
· Experience with TSYS, including CBOS, Green Screens, PPM, and ticketing systems.
· Proven ability to assess merchant creditworthiness, fraud exposure, chargeback risk, and overall portfolio risk.
· Experience reviewing merchant applications, financial statements, processing history, and supporting documentation for underwriting decisions.
· Experience establishing underwriting conditions and risk mitigation strategies, including rolling reserves, funding delays, processing limits, and other reserve structures.
· Strong understanding of payment networks, card brand regulations, PCI DSS, ACH, and payment facilitation models.
· Working knowledge of KYC, KYB, AML, OFAC, and SAR requirements.
· Strong analytical and investigative skills with advanced Excel proficiency.
· Experience using SQL and/or Python for data analysis.
· Familiarity with merchant agreements, financial statement analysis, reserve structures, and credit underwriting practices.
· Ability to identify unusual activity, investigate risk concerns, and make sound underwriting decisions in a fast-paced environment.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills.

· Experience with Fiserv platforms.
· Experience with collections, liens, and chargeback or refund recovery processes.
