Job Title: Controller

Location: Woodbridge, ON (Fully On-site)

Type: Permanent

Salary: $135,000–$160,000/yr (dependant on experience)

We are partnered with a well-established and growing ICI Construction Management firm based in Woodbridge, Ontario. With over 20 years in business and annual revenues ranging between $60M–$90M, this organization has built a strong reputation delivering institutional, commercial, industrial, and healthcare projects across the GTA. Due to a planned retirement, they are seeking a Controller to step into a critical leadership role reporting directly to the President. This is a high-trust, hands-on position where you will oversee the entire finance function and serve as a key business partner to ownership.

This opportunity is ideal for an experienced construction finance leader who understands working capital, bonding, surety relationships, and project-based revenue recognition — and who isn’t afraid to ask the tough questions to protect margins and cash flow.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Leadership & Reporting

  • Oversee full-cycle accounting operations for the primary operating entity and related entities
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and management reporting
  • Manage cash flow forecasting and working capital in a project-driven environment
  • Lead WIP (Work-in-Progress) reporting and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition
  • Prepare year-end working papers and coordinate with external accountants

Construction Accounting & Job Costing

  • Monitor job cost reporting across 20+ active projects
  • Verify contracts against schedules of values (SOVs) to ensure accurate billing and cost tracking
  • Manage over/under billings and ensure accurate project-based financial reporting
  • Liaise with surety and bonding companies, maintaining strong financial transparency

Payroll & Compliance

  • Oversee full-cycle payroll (union and non-union), partnering with an external payroll provider
  • Ensure all remittances and compliance filings are accurate and timely (CRA, WSIB, EHT, T4s, ROEs, union reporting)
  • Prepare and review HST filings and other government remittances

Team Leadership & Process Improvement

  • Supervise and support two accounting staff (AP/AR)
  • Strengthen internal controls and improve financial processes
  • Identify automation opportunities within Excel and accounting systems

Requirements:

  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within construction or project-based environments
  • Strong knowledge of job costing, WIP reporting, SOVs, and percentage-of-completion accounting
  • Experience working with surety and bonding companies
  • Hands-on payroll experience, including union payroll and related compliance
  • Strong working capital and cash flow management expertise
  • Advanced Excel skills; experience with construction ERP systems (Jonas preferred but not required)
  • Confident communicator who is proactive, direct, and comfortable challenging assumptions when necessary
  • CPA designation considered an asset, but practical construction experience is most important

Why This Role:

  • Report directly to an engaged and entrepreneurial President
  • Join a growing construction firm with long-term expansion plans
  • Opportunity to step into a well-built finance function and modernize it further
  • Fully employer-paid benefits, 4 weeks vacation, discretionary bonus
  • Long-term growth potential - this role could evolve as the company continues to scale

If you are a construction-focused Controller who understands the realities of project-driven cash flow and wants to play a key leadership role in a growing organization, we would love to hear from you.
