Mechanical Engineer – Build Next-Generation Composite Defense Systems at a Rapidly Scaling Seed-Stage Startup!

El Segundo | On-site

Opportunity Summary

A fast-growing seed-stage defense technology startup is seeking a hands-on Mechanical Engineer to help design and build advanced composite-based systems that support critical U.S. defense missions. The team is already moving quickly with active government contracts in place and is looking for an engineer who can contribute immediately in an environment where iteration, creativity, and ownership define success. In this role, you will work on complex mechanical and electromechanical systems related to next-generation composite structures. You will take designs from concept through detailed modeling, prototyping, testing, and transition into early production. If you enjoy building hardware that performs in demanding field environments and want to join a company experiencing rapid growth, this is a rare opportunity to join early and have a significant impact.

About Us

We are an emerging defense-focused engineering startup developing a new composite manufacturing approach that significantly increases production speed, lowers cost, and enhances structural strength. Supported by high-credibility investors and already engaged in active defense programs, we combine advanced materials, ruggedized mechanical design, and rapid iteration to deliver next-generation systems for mission-critical applications. Our team operates at the intersection of deep technology and practical deployment, and we are scaling quickly to meet growing demand.

Job Duties

  • Lead mechanical system architecture from initial concept through detailed CAD models, assemblies, and drawings.
  • Design components and assemblies using metals, plastics, and composite structures while optimizing for manufacturability, durability, and environmental constraints.
  • Select and specify mechanical components including gears, bearings, springs, fasteners, machined parts, and precision mechanisms.
  • Build and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs), interface definitions, and mechanical requirements documentation.
  • Conduct design trade studies that evaluate cost, weight, manufacturability, structural performance, and environmental factors.
  • Collaborate closely with electrical, systems, and software teams to ensure mechanical designs integrate cleanly at the system level.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide recommendations for manufacturability, assembly processes, and cost optimization.
  • Support fabrication, prototyping, environmental testing, and debugging with rapid iteration based on test feedback.
  • Work closely with manufacturing and supply chain teams to transition designs into production-ready hardware.
  • Maintain engineering documentation, test plans, validation results, and configuration control across mechanical deliverables.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4+ years of mechanical design experience in aerospace, defense, composite structures, high-reliability hardware, or ruggedized systems.
  • Strong skill set in modern CAD software such as SolidWorks or Creo including assemblies, tolerance analysis, and detailed drawings.
  • Ability to design for manufacturability and assembly while selecting appropriate materials and mechanical components.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with experience performing mechanical trade studies and evaluating design options.
  • Comfortable collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams, suppliers, and prototype technicians.
  • Ability to operate effectively within a fast-paced and dynamic early-stage startup environment.

Preferred Experience

  • Background in composite structures, advanced materials, or defense-grade mechanical systems.
  • Experience supporting structural, vibration, thermal, or environmental testing.
  • Familiarity with simulation or FEA tools for structural or thermal analysis.
  • Hands-on experience assisting with prototype builds, mechanical debugging, or rapid mechanical iteration.
  • Exposure to manufacturing tooling, fixtures, jigs, or transitioning designs into low-volume or scaled production.
  • Ability to obtain or prior experience working within security clearance environments is helpful but not required.

Why Join Us

  • Join a high-velocity seed-stage startup advancing next-generation composite technology for defense applications.
  • Contribute meaningfully from day one with significant ownership of designs and decisions.
  • Strong opportunities for growth as the company expands.
  • Flexible work environment that values autonomy and impact.
  • Medical, dental, and vision benefits.
  • 401(k) retirement plan.
  • Equity options that allow you to participate in company success.
  • Work with cutting-edge materials, novel manufacturing processes, and high-impact defense programs.

Compensation Details

$110,000 - $150,000
