HireIQ Solutions is leading the search for a Civil Engineer, PE, Water/Wastewater to join an Alaskan-owned, multidisciplinary engineering and surveying firm with a long-standing presence across Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. The firm provides planning, design, and construction support services for federal, state, municipal, tribal, and private clients, with a strong focus on projects that directly improve local communities.
This role will focus on community water and wastewater infrastructure, including treatment systems, water distribution, sewage collection, wastewater pump stations, permitting, studies, construction documents, and construction administration. The Role
We’re seeking a full-time Civil Engineer, PE, Water/Wastewater in Anchorage to help plan, design, and deliver community water and wastewater infrastructure projects throughout Alaska. This person will play a key role in developing construction documents, designing treatment and piping systems, coordinating with regulatory agencies, supporting construction administration, and mentoring junior technical staff. This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys technically meaningful infrastructure work, values collaboration, and is comfortable supporting projects in both urban and remote Alaska communities.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Develop construction documents, including drawings, specifications, and cost estimates, for community water and wastewater infrastructure.
- Design water and wastewater treatment systems.
- Design piped water distribution and sewage collection systems.
- Design wastewater pump stations.
- Develop reports and studies, including alternatives evaluations and cost estimating.
- Prepare engineering calculations as needed to support design work.
- Develop DEC plan review checklists and permit applications.
- Coordinate with regulatory agencies.
- Perform construction administration services, including submittal reviews, periodic inspections, start-up services, and related field support.
- Oversee EITs and technical staff as needed, including assigning tasks and reviewing/approving work for planning, design, and construction administration.
- Coach and mentor junior staff.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills & Abilities
- Experience with engineering design and construction of arctic and subarctic water and wastewater systems.
- Knowledge of environmental health rules, regulations, ordinances, codes, administrative orders, and related operational guidelines.
- Knowledge of project management principles and practices.
- Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with co-workers, contractors, governmental agencies, and clients.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work in a team environment with multidisciplinary engineering staff at various experience levels.
- Desire to mentor junior staff and help support their professional development.
- Resourceful, innovative, and motivated to help clients meet project objectives.
- Willing and able to travel to remote Alaska villages in small aircraft and lodge under camp-like settings for multiple days.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
- Licensed Professional Civil Engineer, PE, in Alaska, or PE license in another state with the ability to obtain Alaska PE licensure within 12 months of accepting the position.
- Minimum 5 years of professional, relevant engineering experience.
- Experience working in rural Alaska is a plus.
- Experience with AutoCAD and/or Revit is a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to travel to communities throughout Alaska with sufficient notice.
- Ability to access and navigate job sites and construction areas.
- Ability to ingress and egress from small planes.
- Comfort with ATV use and cold-weather project conditions.
- Ability to lift up to 40 pounds at times.
