HireIQ Solutions (the exclusive search partner for this role) is leading the search for an Electrical Sustaining Engineer to join a US-based manufacturer of custom HVAC equipment used for air handling and cooling in mission-critical data centers. This team designs and builds engineered-to-order air handlers and integrated cooling systems with UL-rated control panels that support hyperscale, enterprise, and modular data center deployments. The role focuses on sustaining and continuously improving electrical and controls designs across a growing product portfolio.
Role Overview
Support the design, reliability, and manufacturability of safe, compliant electrical and controls systems from prototype through release and field support.
What You’ll Do
- Design & Documentation
- Develop or modify electrical diagrams and controls system designs for prototypes and product updates.
- Define component specifications and prepare product documentation, operating instructions, and related technical literature.
- Build and maintain BOMs and translation documents for new or changed designs.
- Integration & Collaboration
- Read and redline schematics; recommend changes to optimize performance and safety.
- Partner with electrical and mechanical designers/engineers to ensure seamless system integration.
- Provide design guidance and oversight to assigned electrical designers.
- Testing, Compliance & Quality
- Establish procedures for testing, operation, maintenance, and repair.
- Test and troubleshoot electrical/controls products to ensure safe, reliable operation.
- Support or lead DFMEAs and PFMEAs; participate in CFD, FEA, and seismic evaluations/testing as needed.
- Stay current with codes/standards and ensure designs meet requirements including UL, CE, NEC, IBC, and NFPA.
- Change Management & Production Support
- Work with engineering and operations to implement Engineering Change Notices (ECNs).
- Support prototypes and early production builds to enable smooth product and feature releases.
- Coordinate part deviations/approvals; assist with test fixtures and prototype builds.
- Costing & Tools
- Create cost estimates for materials, labor, and equipment.
- Perform electrical CAD modeling and simulations; support or develop EPLAN programs for units.
Qualifications
- Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology with ~5+ years of industry experience; or an Associate’s degree with ~10+ years of relevant experience.
- Technical Skills
- Proficiency reading and creating electrical schematics and panel layouts.
- Experience with ECAD tools (EPLAN Electric P8, AutoCAD Electrical, or similar).
- Knowledge of industrial control panels, VFDs, PLC/HMI fundamentals, and UL/NEC compliance practices.
- Familiarity with FMEA methods; exposure to CFD/FEA/seismic evaluations is a plus.
- Soft Skills
- Collaborative, detail-oriented, and comfortable providing oversight to designers.
- Strong documentation, testing, and troubleshooting discipline.

- Ability to travel on occasion to production or customer sites as required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to sit or stand for the majority of a work shift.
- Ability to work occasionally in environments below 32°F or above 90°F.
- Ability to travel to customer sites to resolve field issues when necessary.
