Lead Software Engineer

Role introduction

We are hiring a Lead Software Engineer for a high-growth but profitable food-tech marketplace.

This is a role working directly with the leadership team and founders, taking full ownership of technical strategy and implementation, with a path to CTO.

The role and problem space

This is a role for an engineer who is curious and interested in building scalable, resilient software for a real-world, complex business use case. This role is working directly with a successful founder, helping plan and implement technical strategy using the latest AI and agentic tools, in a business which has a progressive culture.

The role is responsible for two products: a greenfield build for an Australia-wide marketplace which has already proven to have market fit, and an existing platform supporting a complex operational business. This will require an engineer to understand real-world business problems and work with non-technical people.

You

We are looking for both Senior Engineers and an Engineering Lead, up to CTO level, who have both strong technical skill in architecture and implementation, alongside strong product and real-world problem-solving skills, while building with the latest modern AI and agentic tooling available, leveraging the latest frontier LLMs in both the product itself and the build.

This role is ideal for an engineer who has excellent technical skill, but now wants to grow and be challenged in product and further non-technical areas of being an engineer.

This is a high-ownership role with significant responsibility.

Required skills

• Strong full-stack software engineering skills, ideally TypeScript
• Strong architecture skills and product awareness, with the ability to scope and prioritise ideas with technical and non-technical teams
• Some experience building software for a real-world use case, not just SaaS for users behind a screen
• Excellent communication skills. You enjoy communicating with non-technical people and helping to scope ideas
• Interested in how to build with AI products and the latest capability of LLMs

Nice to have

• Experience in a complex operational business model, such as food, logistics or pharma

Stack

We're flexible to look at engineers who come from any software stack, but we use TypeScript, Node, React, Postgres and GCP.

Benefits and culture

This is a young, growing business with strong momentum. The founder is close to the product and you'll have access to, and be advised by, an accomplished ASX CTO for guidance when needed.

The office is in Sydney CBD and the team works mostly together in person, 4 days per week. This will suit someone who likes pace and being close to the people building the business.

The work is also defensible against AI. The product, customers and operation are physical, which makes the business harder to replicate and gives the engineering work tangible impact.

Comp

AUD $170k-$220k base, depending on experience. Beyond this may be possible for outstanding candidates.
