About The Role

Reporting to the Enterprise Managing Partner (EMP), the Broiler Barn Manager oversees the daily operations and management of Greenbelt Farms broiler poultry farm, ensuring the production of healthy chickens for production purposes. The role involves planning, organizing, and supervising all aspects of the poultry farm to ensure smooth operations, optimal productivity and efficiency, and the highest standards of animal welfare.

 

Key Responsibilities

Strategy and Planning

  • Model and promote Greenbelt Farms’ vision and mission.
  • Provide strategic direction and goals to the EMP to grow and sustain effective broiler barn operations.
  • Develop annual plans for broiler barn effective operations, staffing, regulatory and compliance controls, for review and approval by EMP.
  • Prepare and manage budgets for broiler barn operations and report quarterly results to EMP.
  • Identify trends or areas for improvement and implement changes accordingly.
  • Establish and track to key performance indicators and metrics reporting.
  • Analyze performance data and provide reports to EMP and at Board meetings.
  • Attend and represent Greenbelt Farms at various Alberta Chicken Producer Meetings.
  • Research and maintain knowledge of industry and technology changes and trends, implementing best practices as appropriate.


Operations Management

  • Oversee the day-to-day operations, including feeding, watering and care of broilers.
  • Plan, prioritize, communicate, and monitor operational tasks and priorities.
  • Create a Poultry Plan to track and report on production, quality control, and performance.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve barn efficiency and productivity.
  • Ensure maintenance of facilities and equipment, approving related capital costs.
  • Monitor flock health and well-being, identifying and addressing issues such as diseases or environmental stress.
  • Ensure proper stocking density, ventilation, lighting, and temperature control for optimal growth.


Health, Safety and Compliance

  • Enforce strict biosecurity measures to prevent disease outbreaks.
  • Maintain high standards of animal welfare and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Liaise with veterinarians for vaccinations, health checks, and treatment plans.
  • Monitor and manage flock performance to achieve key performance indicators.
  • Ensure timely procurement and management of feed, equipment, and other supplies.
  • Maintain accurate records of flock health, feed usage, mortality rates, and production data.


People Management

  • Provide oversight and direction to employees in accordance with Greenbelt Farms’ policies, guidelines, and standard operating procedures.
  • Manage and train barn staff, ensuring adherence to company policies and procedures.
  • Provide management and oversight to direct reports including recruitment, onboarding, performance. management, employee development, training, and general support.
  • Lead weekly Broiler Barn Staff Meeting, following up on issues/concerns as required.
  • Supervise and train farm staff in biosecurity, animal welfare, and operational procedures.
  • Schedule shifts and assign tasks to ensure smooth operations.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing coaching and development to uphold performance standards.
  • Approve time records, additional hours, and requests for time off for direct reports.

 

Perform other duties assigned by the Enterprise Managing Partner.


Skills and Qualifications

  • Degree or diploma in agriculture, animal science, poultry science, or a related field (preferred but not required).
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in poultry management or a similar role.
  • Knowledge of broiler farm production.
  • Superior organizational, problem-solving, prioritization, and time management skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Strong knowledge of poultry health, nutrition, and biosecurity practices.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and make informed decisions.
  • Proficiency in data management and record-keeping.
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding barn environment, including standing for long periods, handling equipment, and lifting up to 100 lbs.
