Since its founding in 1998, Gateway has grown into a multi-division business with more than 50 team members serving cattle producers and buyers across Canada and the United States.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Director of Finance and Administration plays a senior leadership role at Gateway Livestock, overseeing the organization’s financial operations and providing clear, practical financial guidance to support day to day decision making and long-term sustainability. Reporting to the ownership group, this role balances hands on financial leadership with strong judgment in a complex, high volume, commodity driven environment.

This role is well suited to a finance leader who wants to be deeply embedded in the business. The Director of Finance will work closely with partners and operational leaders across Gateway’s divisions, supporting not only accounting and reporting, but also banking relationships, risk management, information technology, and broader business decisions. close collaboration with a long tenured team in a flat, non-hierarchical environment. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Accounting and Financial Management

  • Maintain clean, accurate accounting records and ensure timely, high quality financial reporting across all Gateway entities
  • Prepare financial information in clear, practical, and understandable formats to support partners and management in decision making
  • Oversee day to day accounting activities while also addressing complex, non routine issues that require judgment and problem solving
  • Ensure strong internal controls, consistency, and discipline in financial processes while keeping systems practical and fit for purpose

Treasury, Credit, and Risk Management

  • Manage and protect Gateway’s banking relationships, which are critical to the ongoing viability of the business
  • Monitor banking covenants, ratios, and conditions on an ongoing basis
  • Oversee controls related to large and complex cash flows
  • Support partners in financial control processes such as wire approvals, signing authorities, and risk safeguards.

Systems, Technology, and Process Improvement

  • Take ownership of financial systems and system integration, ensuring tools are well leveraged and appropriate for the business
  • Identify opportunities to modernize and improve processes, including awareness of newer technologies and emerging tools where they add real value
  • Serve as the internal point of coordination between finance, IT vendors, legal advisors, and external partners
  • Continuously evaluate and improve internal controls, workflows, and reporting as the organization evolves

Leadership

  • Provide hands on leadership to a small, long tenured finance team, with a strong focus on continuity, engagement, and trust
  • Maintain and strengthen a culture of stability, mutual respect, accountability, and open communication
  • Operate effectively in a flat, non-hierarchical environment with an open-door culture and shared accountability
  • Mentor and support team members, stepping in as a problem solver when issues fall outside routine processes

Strategic and Operational Support

  • Support legal and contractual review, treasury activities, and risk related decisions
  • Participate in operational and strategic discussions with partners beyond traditional finance responsibilities
  • Act as a thought partner who can constructively challenge ideas, provide alternative perspectives, and support sound decision making

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • CPA designation or equivalent professional accounting qualification
  • Senior level experience in finance or accounting, ideally within agriculture, commodities, logistics, or similarly complex operational environments
  • Strong technical accounting expertise combined with sound commercial judgment
  • Well versed in Commodity Risk Management tools such as Forward Contracts, Futures Contracts, and Options.
  • Demonstrated experience managing banking relationships, credit facilities, and covenant compliance
  • Proven ability to manage cash flow, liquidity, and financial risk in high volume environments
  • Ability to translate financial information into clear, actionable insights for non financial partners
  • Comfortable working in a hands on role within a privately held, entrepreneurial organization
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the confidence to engage directly with owners, bankers, and external advisors
  • Practical experience with financial systems, integrations, and process improvement initiatives
  • Leadership style grounded in collaboration, accountability, and long-term team development
