Seeking: Board of Directors for Sqéwqel Development Corporation (SqDC) – As the economic engine of the Sqéwqel (Seabird Island) Band in Agassiz, SqDC is generating long-term prosperity through business development, land stewardship, and strategic investments.

ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Sqéwqel is a Stó:lō and Nlaka’pamux community located along the Fraser River near Agassiz, British Columbia. Since time immemorial, the community has stewarded its lands, culture, and language, guided by Halq’eméylem and deeply rooted cultural values. Today, Sqéwqel advances health, education, infrastructure, and economic development in pursuit of long-term self-sufficiency and prosperity for future generations.

SqDC was established in 2014 to operate at arms-length as Sqéwqel’s development corporation to build a strong and sustainable economy for Sqéwqel. Revenue is generated through a diverse set of businesses within the real estate, energy, construction, retail, and hospitality sectors. SqDC provides the highest level of management within the business group’s set of operating businesses, while also leading development of strategic partnerships that drive revenue and employment opportunities.

Sqéwqel and SqDC are seeking four individuals to serve as Directors to provide governance and strategic oversight in alignment with this mandate. This commitment requires participation in approximately 10 – 12 meetings per year.


ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide governance oversight to ensure for-profit businesses are successful, sustainable, and aligned with Sqéwqel’s vision, mission, and values.
  • Support the development and execution of SqDC’s vision, strategy, and business plans with defined timeframes and measurable milestones.
  • Oversee recruitment, evaluation, and support of the CEO.
  • Approve annual business plans and budgets; review financial and operational performance; ensure compliance with internal policies and external regulations.
  • Ensure comprehensive and regular financial and operational reporting.


QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Given the diversity and scale of SqDC’s business portfolio, strong candidates will demonstrate:

  • Strong overall business acumen and strategic thinking.
  • A firm understanding of EBITDA, cash flow management, and key financial performance drivers.
  • Commercial due diligence experience, including evaluating investment opportunities, risk exposure, and return profiles.
  • Professional competencies and/or experience in areas such as business development, business management, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, Indigenous title and rights, human resources, technology, or innovation.
  • Knowledge of, or experience in, one or more relevant sectors, including:
  • Energy and fuel services
  • Real estate development (residential, commercial, and / or industrial)
  • Resource extraction and aggregate materials
  • Hospitality and tourism
  • Retail and food services
  • Business park and land development
  • Revenue-sharing and strategic partnership agreements
  • Previous experience serving as a Director or working with a Board of Directors.
  • Experience working with First Nations governments and communities.
  • Proven leadership and relationship-building experience.
  • Availability to participate in internal and external events that support corporate objectives.


REQUIRED SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

  • 19 years of age or older.
  • Of good character, credibility, and reputation within the Sqéwqel / Stó:lō community.
  • Willingness to learn and devote the time required to undertake training and fulfill Director responsibilities.
  • Ability to act impartially, maintain confidentiality, and identify and avoid conflicts of interest.
  • No criminal convictions.
  • No bankruptcy declared within the past ten (10) years.
  • Familiarity with Stó:lō and Nlaka’pamux traditional knowledge and cultural values.
  • Demonstrated positive attitude, teamwork, and alignment with community values.


TIME COMMITMENT & COMPENSATION

Directors can expect a time commitment of approximately 2-3 hours per month, which includes preparation for and attendance at monthly Board meetings.

Directors will receive an honorarium in recognition of their time and contributions and will be reimbursed for reasonable travel and related expenses incurred in support of Board meetings.
