Magnetawan First Nation’s Finance Department provides financial stewardship and accountability to the community and its leadership. The department ensures sound fiscal management of band operations, contributes to strategic planning, and supports community development through strong financial governance.


Under the direction of the Executive Director and in collaboration with the Chief and Council, the Director of Finance is responsible for overseeing the overall financial health of the organization. This includes managing budgets, supervising finance staff, ensuring compliance with all applicable funding agreements and regulations, and supporting departments with timely and accurate financial reporting. The ideal candidate is experienced, detail-oriented, ethical, and committed to strengthening the financial infrastructure of the First Nation.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage and oversee all financial operations, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, bank reconciliations, and general ledger.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor annual budgets in collaboration with departments and leadership.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for Chief and Council, funders, and auditors.
  • Attend Chief and Council meetings to present financial reports, provide updates, and support decision making.
  • Lead the annual audit process and liaise with external auditors to ensure timely and accurate reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with Indigenous Services Canada (ISC), funding agreements, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Provide financial advice and support to program managers and Council to aid in strategic decision-making.
  • Supervise and mentor finance department staff, ensuring ongoing training and development.
  • Create, maintain and enhance internal control systems and financial policies for the organization.
  • Identify and mitigate financial risks to the organization.
  • Other duties as assigned.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, EXPERIENCES, AND SKILLS:

  • Post-secondary education in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field. (CPA designation preferred)
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a senior financial management role, preferably within a First Nation, public, or non-profit organization.
  • Strong knowledge of fund accounting, Indigenous funding structures, and financial compliance requirements.
  • Experience in preparing for and managing financial audits.
  • Proficiency in financial software and Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • High level of professionalism, confidentiality, and integrity.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of Anishinaabemowin is an asset.
  • Experience working in or with First Nation communities is an asset.
