Arctic UAV and Sedna ROV are sister companies based in Iqaluit, working year-round across the Canadian Arctic. We deliver aerial LiDAR, photogrammetry, ROV inspections, and bathymetric mapping for government and private-sector clients. As we take on more missions across Nunavut and the broader Arctic, we are building our next bench of mission-ready surveyors. 


Opportunity Overview 

The Lead USV Operator is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing Arctic hydrographic survey operations using the ASV Viper uncrewed surface vessel, along with supporting aerial (UAV) and marine survey technologies. The role ensures smooth operations with a focus on safe, high-quality survey delivery across remote Arctic environments. 

Reporting to the CEO, the Lead USV Operator provides technical and operational leadership for field programs, including oversight, supervision, and mentorship of Hydrographic Survey & UAV Mission Trainees. Providing key project management, this role is responsible for vessel operations, data acquisition quality, mission planning, and adherence to Transport Canada regulatory requirements. The role combines marine command, survey expertise, arctic awareness and people leadership, with a strong emphasis on safety, cultural awareness, and community engagement in Inuit Nunangat. 


Responsibilities 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Lead hydrographic survey missions from a full cycle of planning, execution, demobilization 
  • Operate and manage ASV Viper in compliance with Transport Canada regulations  
  • Serve as Person-in-Charge (Master 150 GT) for applicable voyages  
  • Oversee survey data acquisition (multibeam, UAV, LiDAR, GNSS)  
  • Supervise, mentor, and train mission trainees in field operations  
  • Ensure safety, risk management, and regulatory compliance  
  • Coordinate logistics for remote Arctic deployments  
  • Support community engagement and culturally respectful operations 


Who We’re Looking For – Versatile Master, 150GT 

Required: 

  • Transport Canada Master 150 GT Certificate (Near Coastal or higher), with required Transport Canada certifications: 
  • STCW Basic Safety 
  • STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats 
  • STCW Advanced Fire Fighting 
  • Restricted Operator’s Certificate (ROC-MC) 
  • SEN Limited 
  • Marine Advanced First Aid 
  • Valid Marine Medical 
  • Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP) certificate 
  • Experience operating vessels in remote or Arctic environments  
  • Hydrographic survey or marine data acquisition experience 


Assets: 

  • Experience with ASVs, UAVs, ROVs, or geospatial technologies  
  • Hydrographic certification (IHO S-5 or similar)  
  • Experience supervising or mentoring teams 
  • Experience working in Inuit communities or Arctic regions 


Priority will be given to Inuit applicants and Nunavut beneficiaries, however we are accepting applications from all qualified candidates.
