Poulson Law
Greater Sudbury, ON
Apply for this job

Poulson Law is an Ontario‑based law firm with a strong reputation for providing practical, client‑focused legal services. The firm advises individuals and businesses across key practice areas, including real estate, wills and estates, and corporate and commercial law, and is known for its professional, collaborative, and down‑to‑earth approach.

As the firm continues to grow, Poulson Law is seeking a hands‑on Controller to play a central role in the firm’s day‑to‑day financial operations. Reporting directly to firm leadership, this role is well suited to an experienced accounting professional who is comfortable working closely with the details, supporting operational needs, and ensuring accuracy, compliance, and strong financial control in a professional services environment.

YOUR DAY TO DAY

  • Perform and oversee full‑cycle accounting activities, including daily transaction review, month‑end and year‑end close, journal entries, and general ledger maintenance.
  • Prepare, review, and post reconciliations (bank, trust, credit cards, payroll, HST, etc.), investigating and resolving discrepancies directly.
  • Actively manage trust and operating accounts, including daily monitoring of balances, trust reconciliations, and compliance with Law Society trust accounting requirements.
  • Oversee billing, work‑in‑progress (WIP), accounts receivable, and collections, working closely with lawyers and staff to resolve issues, address write‑offs, and improve cash flow.
  • Handle payroll processing and reviews, including remittances and filings (HST, WSIB, EHT, source deductions), ensuring accuracy and adherence to deadlines.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, management reports, and variance analysis, ensuring ownership has clear, actionable information.
  • Work directly with external accountants, auditors, and banks, gathering documentation, answering queries, and supporting year‑end and audit processes.
  • Maintain and improve accounting systems, workflows, and reporting, including hands‑on troubleshooting and process clean‑up as needed.
  • Strengthen and apply internal controls and accounting procedures through daily oversight rather than policy‑only implementation.
  • Provide on‑the‑ground financial support to firm leadership, responding to ad‑hoc questions, cash flow needs, and operational issues as they arise.
  • Work closely with and provide day‑to‑day guidance to bookkeeping staff, reviewing work, setting priorities, and stepping in directly when required.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • 5–7+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • CPA designation is an asset but not required
  • Experience overseeing full‑cycle accounting in a high‑volume environment
  • Strong understanding of financial controls and compliance requirements
  • Experience working directly with ownership or senior leadership
  • Comfortable operating in a hands‑on, deadline‑driven setting
  • Prior experience in professional services or regulated environments is an asset

WHAT’S IN IT FOR YOU

  • Competitive salary, commensurate with experience
  • Discretionary bonus potential
  • Generous vacation and firm‑wide holiday closures
  • Stable, long‑tenured team and positive workplace culture
  • Opportunity to make a meaningful impact and grow with the firm
