The Refrigeration Technician is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and operation of the refrigeration systems in the arena, ensuring a consistent and high-quality ice surface for all events. This role involves troubleshooting, inspecting, and maintaining refrigeration equipment and working closely with the facility team to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the arena.


Key Responsibilities


  • Perform routine inspections, maintenance, and repairs of refrigeration systems, compressors, condensers, and evaporators per established schedule and as required.
  • Monitor and adjust system controls to maintain the desired ice surface quality
  • Conduct regular maintenance of chillers, ice resurfacers (Zambonis), and related equipment.
  • Diagnose issues with refrigeration equipment and perform necessary repairs.
  • Respond to refrigeration-related emergencies and ensure timely resolution of any system failures.
  • Replace faulty parts and ensure all systems are operating efficiently.
  • Maintain the ice surface by monitoring temperature, humidity, and ice thickness.
  • Operate the ice resurfacing machine and ensure a smooth, level surface for events.
  • Address any ice-related issues promptly to prevent damage or unsafe conditions.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations concerning refrigeration systems and arena operations.
  • Maintain records of refrigerant usage and comply with environmental standards related to refrigeration gases (e.g., ammonia, R22, or other refrigerants).
  • Conduct regular safety inspections of refrigeration equipment and the facility.
  • Work closely with the facility management and operations team to ensure the arena is ready for events and meets operational standards.
  • Assist with other facility maintenance tasks when required, such as HVAC, plumbing, or electrical systems.
  • As requested, work collaboratively with members of the Public Works team to potentially support other maintenance or repair needs.
  • Maintain detailed records of maintenance, repairs, and system performance.
  • Provide regular reports to the Facility Manager on the condition of the refrigeration system and any required upgrades or repairs.


Experience and Education

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent mechanical and technical troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain high standards of safety.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Good communication skills and ability to report system issues clearly.
  • Physical stamina to work in cold environments and lift heavy equipment when necessary.
  • Strong knowledge of refrigeration systems, including ammonia-based and other industrial refrigerants.
  • Familiarity with ice-making equipment and the ability to operate a Zamboni or similar ice resurfacer.
  • Working knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and HVAC systems
  • A teamwork mentality and flexible approach to assisting with tasks as assigned.
  • Awareness of and ability to demonstrate cultural awareness and sensitivity.
  • Understand and promote Mushuau Innu First Nation's culture, language, and values.


Experience and Education Requirements:

  • Certificate or diploma in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (HVACR) or related field.
  • Refrigeration Mechanic (Red Seal) certification is preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working with refrigeration systems, preferably in an arena or large-scale facility.
