ABOUT THE ROLE 

Reporting to the Associate Executive Director, The Lands & Natural Resources Manager provides strategic leadership that protects Tl’azt’en Nation’s resources while developing and advancing responsible development opportunities. By coordinating stewardship, research, consultation, and departmental operations, this role strengthens the Nation’s rights & title, supports informed decision-making, and ensures that natural resource initiatives uphold the Nation’s long-term interests and sustainability. , The Lands & Natural Resources Manager manages the day-to-day operations of the Lands and Natural Resources program including the management and development of staff and the efficient and effective management of the program resources to support the Tl’azt’en First Nation. There is flexibility for a hybrid work arrangement, balancing time in community with time working from the Prince George satellite office.


KEY RESPONSBILITIES

The Lands & Natural Resources Manager is accountable for the development and implementation of plans to both protect the Nation’s natural resources and increase opportunities for revenue generation through existing and potentially new and sustainable initiatives:

  • Leads strategic and operational planning by identifying priority natural resource initiatives, directing research, and ensuring progress is monitored and reported to strengthen long-term stewardship and decision-making.
  • Act as a liaison and lead negotiations with government (federal and provincial), industry, other First Nations, and community members on resource-related agreements, permits, and issues.
  • Develops funding proposals and negotiates contribution agreements for lands and natural resources funding from federal, provincial and private sources. Ensures that all reporting requirements are met on time and on budget.
  • Oversees departmental budgeting, funding agreements, and financial reporting to ensure accurate, responsible, and compliant management of all natural resource finances.
  • Directs and evaluates all lands and natural resource programs—including GIS, assessments, reporting, and stewardship guidance—to protect Rights & Title and uphold responsible resource management across Tl’azt’en territory.
  • Builds strong relationships with community members, keyoh holders, indigenous rights holders, partners, and external bodies through engagement, consultation, and transparent communication that reflects community priorities and protects culturally significant areas.
  • Develops and enforces strategies, policies and controls that ensure all natural resource activities comply with relevant Indigenous values and laws, legislation, treaties, privacy, and security standards.
  • Provide oversight of environmental and regulatory processes, including assessments, permitting, and compliance monitoring, to ensure responsible and compliant natural resource activities.
  • Leads, mentors, and supports staff to ensure a safe, skilled, and productive team capable of delivering high-quality natural resource programs and services.
  • Cultivates a coaching and mentoring culture that empowers staff through feedback, capacity building and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborates with other Tl’azt’en Nation departments to integrate health considerations into broader community-development strategies.
  • Attend leadership meetings, contributes to strategic planning sessions to align with the Nation’s overall vision and goals.
  • Reporting to senior leadership and Council on resource issues, risks, and opportunities.


SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Post-secondary education in environmental science, lands and natural resources, forestry, project management, or other related field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of prior management and related experience, ideally in a management role within a First Nations organization, with responsibility for natural resource and land management and planning.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, and procedures relating to First Nations administration.
  • Knowledge of Aboriginal Rights and Title and Land Management.
  • Ability to develop clear natural resource management strategies and plans and manage resources, including people, materials, assets, and money, to achieve desired goals.
  • Strong leadership, negotiation, research and analytical skills
  • Good knowledge of environmental concerns and land management practices and how best to balance with economic development opportunities.
  • Ability to problem-solve and develop innovative and forward-thinking solutions
  • Strong ability to develop and manage relationships
  • Excellent negotiation, facilitation, and conflict resolution skills
  • A demonstrated ability to coach and mentor others to build skills and capacity
  • Demonstrated skills in leading, planning, coordinating and managing complex projects.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills including use of software applications
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity
  • Demonstrate a dedication to the role and to the Community
  • A valid driver’s licence
