Our client, a privately held organization in the real estate investment and development sector, is seeking a Director of Finance to oversee its finance function and support ongoing operations. The organization manages a diversified portfolio and operates in a hands‑on environment where leadership is closely involved in day‑to‑day decision‑making.
This is a key leadership role reporting directly to ownership, responsible for ensuring the integrity of financial operations while strengthening processes, reporting, and controls. The Director of Finance will lead a small team, manage relationships with external advisors, and provide timely financial insight to support both operational requirements and longer‑term priorities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting across multiple entities
- Oversee preparation of financial statements and support year‑end close and external reporting requirements
- Ensure integrity of the general ledger, intercompany balances, and corporate records
- Oversee corporate tax compliance, including T2, T3, T5, partnership filings, and instalments
- Manage indirect tax filings and reconciliations (HST, EHT, WSIB)
- Act as the primary point of contact for CRA correspondence, audits, and assessments
- Oversee payroll processing, including remittances, T4s, ROEs, and related compliance
- Support employee lifecycle administration, including onboarding, offboarding, and benefits coordination
- Oversee cash management, payment approvals, and treasury activities
- Manage banking relationships, financing arrangements, lender reporting, and renewals
- Monitor and administer financing instruments, including mortgages and GICs
- Lead and develop the accounting team, including workload planning and performance support
- Maintain organisational structure and support ongoing team development initiatives
- Oversee accounting systems and tools, including Yardi and related platforms
- Liaise with external partners, including accountants, auditors, legal counsel, lenders, and development stakeholders
- Provide financial reporting, analysis, and ad hoc insights to ownership to support decision‑making
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- CPA designation required
- Minimum 7–10 years of progressive finance or accounting experience, including leadership responsibilities
- Experience in real estate, development, or multi‑entity environments considered an asset
- Strong knowledge of financial reporting, payroll, and corporate tax compliance
- Experience managing multiple priorities and working with external advisors
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with Yardi or similar systems is an asset
- Strong organisational and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to operate in an owner‑led environment
- Hands‑on approach with the ability to balance detail and oversight
