ABOUT THE CONTROLLER
Reporting to the Owner / Operations Manager, the Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial and accounting operations of Stanley. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring active involvement in day-to-day accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls, while also providing strategic financial insight to support operational and business decision-making.
As a key member of the leadership team, the Controller will play a critical role in strengthening financial processes, improving reporting and analysis, and ensuring the integrity and accuracy of financial information across the organization.
KEY LEADERSHIP ACCOUNTABILITIES
Financial Leadership and Strategy
- Oversee day-to-day accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, and reconciliations.
- Evaluate, implement, and enhance financial systems, reporting tools, and processes to improve efficiency, accuracy, and decision support.
- Act as the primary financial liaison with external stakeholders including auditors, banks, and financial service providers.
- Provide financial leadership to support the organization’s strategic objectives, operational performance, and long-term sustainability.
- Act as a trusted advisor to Owner by delivering timely, accurate, and actionable financial analysis and insights.
- Lead the annual budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes, aligning financial targets with operational priorities.
- Develop financial models and scenario analysis to support business planning, capital investment decisions, and growth initiatives.
Financial Management and Reporting
- Oversee the preparation and delivery of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
- Monitor financial performance against budgets and forecasts, analyze variances, and clearly communicate findings and recommendations.
- Establish and maintain robust internal controls, accounting policies, and procedures consistent with applicable accounting standards and best practices.
- Manage cash flow, working capital, inventory valuation, and cost accounting in a manufacturing environment.
Operational and Cost Management
- Partner closely with operations and production teams to understand cost drivers, improve cost visibility, and support margin management.
- Monitor standard costs, inventory controls, and production variances, identifying opportunities for operational and profitability improvements.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by providing financial analysis related to efficiency, productivity, and process optimization.
Compliance, Audit, and Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory and statutory requirements, including corporate tax, GST/PST, payroll, and WCB filings.
- Lead the year-end audit process, coordinating with external auditors and preparing all required schedules, working papers, and documentation.
- Identify financial and operational risks and implement appropriate controls and mitigation strategies.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
The successful candidate will bring strong analytical, problem‑solving, and organizational skills, with a high level of attention to detail and a practical, solutions‑oriented mindset. They are comfortable rolling up their sleeves as needed and are able to clearly and effectively communicate complex financial information to non‑financial stakeholders. This individual demonstrates a collaborative leadership style, builds strong working relationships across the organization, and consistently operates with a high degree of integrity, accountability, and professionalism.
- Post-secondary degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is an asset.
- 5-8+ years of progressive experience in accounting or finance, with demonstrated experience in an operational environment.
- Proven ability to operate in a hands-on Controller role, balancing day-to-day accounting responsibilities with higher-level financial leadership.
- Strong understanding of cost accounting, inventory management, budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting.
- Experience developing and improving financial systems, internal controls, and reporting processes.
- Proficiency with accounting software and advanced Excel skills.
